Editorial Reviews for 21 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello Chardonnay
Tight and still quite oaky on the nose, with inky fruit, black spice notes and nuanced tea and tobacco aromas. Soft, broad and quite generous in the mouth, this lacks the tension of the 2005 and a little of the complexity as well, though it does offer up ripe dark berry fruit that shows a little chocolate, mocha edge through the moderately long finish. 88 points

While this Chardonnay definitely has plenty of rich California style, it shows truly impeccable balance along with supple-ness from lees aging. Expect apple and vanilla bean oak notes on the nose and palate.
Mint and honey aromas, yet also has typical Chardonnay character of apple, pear, tropical fruit, spice and toast. Slightly oily on entry, it finishes long and clean.

I also retasted the 2005 Monte Bello, which after a year in bottle is showing brighter red fruit and spicier mineral character than at this time last year, when I rated it 95 points. Its still a baby. I underestimated this wines potential and would now rate it 95(+?), with excellent cellaring potential. For the quality it is a steal as it can compare to any wine from the Napa Valley that sells for three or four times the money-or mo...
