What to Expect

Argentina, and in particular the region around Mendoza, is making a name for itself as the source of some of the finest expressions of Malbec ever made. In this warm, yet dry climate the Malbec achieves near perfect ripeness endowing the wines with a velvety texture and intense flavors of blackberry, peppery spice, and balsamic herbs. The cooler, well-drained slopes of the hillsides of the region have proven to be ideally suited for Malbec, allowing for the wines to achieve a level of complexity and harmony that rivals those of Napa or Bordeaux.

Winemakers Notes

Reviews

In a blind varietal tasting i would be hard pressed to discern that this wine is a Malbec. The Broquel is deep and rich in color. This wine is elegant and balanced.

This was medium to full bodied, fairly dry (but not overly-so). It requires a bit of time to decant, otherwise the flavors are too spicy and oaky (read: will kind of burn your palate). After about 15-30 minutes of 'breathing' time the flavor calmed down and was actually quite lovely; the fruity components came through but retained a mild spice, just a hint of oak. Very smooth with a long finish. Next bottle I buy I'll probably let it age for a year or two before opening.

After decanting I found the dark beauty opened with elegant silky mocha hints and finished strong. I already went back to the store to buy the rest of the case!

For several vintages running Broquel has nudged the border between very good and excellent, but as in years past the ’06 is a touch tangy and racy, with black cherry, plum and berry flavors. It’s bold, zippy and quite high-toned, but still it’s very ... Wine Enthusiast. A Malbec wine from Mendoza in Argentina. 2006 Trapiche Broquel, Malbec 750ml

This is a very good example of what a malbec can be. If you like malbecs you will like this wine. It is more refined than many other malbecs in this price range and the tannins have been well rounded by the hot Argentina summer. This wine is a very dark purple hue with, spicy notes and a nice finish.
