What to Expect

Riesling is a chameleon of a grape, able to produce world class wines that range from bone dry to unctuously sweet. Germany is most closely associated with Riesling, where all styles are made and the range of flavors runs the gamut from steely and crisp with crunchy mineral-driven flavors to fresh lime, apple and peach flavored expressions - even rich honied, candied fruit tones in the great dessert wines.

Winemakers Notes

The Grand Cru Hengst terroir in Wintzenheim shows itself in power and length, but is fairly discreet when young. Its minerality appears after 5 to 10 years in bottle. The chalk gives power, the marl excitement, and its exposure gives a grilled, toasted character that seems spicy, almost mentholated.

Residual sugar: 4.9 g/l
Soil: Clay and marl limestone of Oligocene
Exposition: South, slope medium to steep

"...a striking Riesling so lush in pineapple and peach fruit, and so loaded with chalk, lemon zest, and white pepper (along with a note of juniper), that I might have mistaken it blind for a top-class Gruner Veltliner. The long, strong finish matches rich fruit to chalky minerality every step of the way...91" WA 3/08

Comes across as restrained - although it will develop finesse over time. There's some dusty minerality and a lot of spice on the finish.

Served with lobster medallion, sweet breads and green asparagus
