I enjoyed this wine with a beef stew. I like the pepper spice and chewiness. The cabernet gives it structure and adds to the complexity. Fruit forward and spicy on the finish.

At $6.99 a copy, this is a very respectable effort by Penfolds. Medium-bodied, with a lightly-spicy berry-tinged backbone and well-matched aroma that is a touch softer--faint plum tones here. Tannins are held in check, and the finish leaves a light blackberry-skin dryness across the palate. Not a world-beater by any means, but pleasant enough with a cold plate of sliced meats and cheeses. Good value here. On a cost+quality basis, this probably rates a 3 1/2. On a wine-only basis, it tops out at 3 even.

Winemaker's Notes:

Jugendliches Rot mit purpurnem Rand. Bukett von reifen Zwetschgen und dunklen Kirschen. Fruchtiger, von gut integrierter Eiche geprägter Geschmack, langer, warmer Abgang. Kraftvoll, harmonisch, runder und ausgesprochen frischer Wein.
