What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Winemakers Notes

Sauternes is a tiny appellation, only about 2% of the Bordeaux vineyards, located 20 kilometres southeast of Bordeaux.

It is difficult to understand with any certainty, due to the lack of written documents, what originally motivated winegrowers to let their grades "rot" on the vine to produce a different kind of wine. Apparently, late harvest wines already existed in the 16th and 17th centuries.

This sort of wine became widespread in Sauternes in the 18th and 19th centuries due to the interest shown by connoisseurs such as Thomas Jefferson and Grand Duke Constantine, read more...

Rich, opulent concentrated and full-bodied. Medium gold with a honeyed, oaky, flowery, tropical fruit bouquet, magnificent and unique.

My first wine I drink was a 57 Lafite Rothschild and I don´t like it at all, I was 15 years old. One year later my fathers brother who was maniac on Sauternes. I remember his wine cellar with all this sweet wines, a palett from bright yellow to dark brown colors. One day I was there with him for a helping hand, after the work, he ask me if want to try a wine. I said, I don´t like wine, he said, but you have not drink a Château d'Yquem the caramel of all caramels.
He put up to huge glasses on a small table and 1 Vintage 1900. I was in trance, so sweet, so many flavors. I still remeber this wines i my head and read more...

The botrytis on this vintage is pristine and wrapped nicely around the apricots, pears, laurel and honey. Yquem's Sauternes are rare and highly coveted. Still considered young by most afficionados but just beginning to evolve. You could drink tonight or hold for years to come. Drink with a slight chill.
