What to Expect

Most famous as the predominant grape in the blended wines of Rioja, Tempranillo has emerged as a potential star in regions as disparate as Australia and California. Tempranillo generally produces medium-bodied wines with juicy acidity and bright raspberry fruit enlivened by notes of dusty earth, dry herbs and leather. Tempranillo is often blended with Grenache, Graciano, and Mazuelo (aka Carignan) in the production of red wine from the Rioja region of Spain.

Winemakers Notes

This is the official Vega Sicilia, only made in top years and released anywhere from 10 to 20 years after the vintage. A characteristic common to all Vega Sicilia vintages is their brightness. Although these wines are relatively old, they retain remarkable freshness due to the good levels of acidity and a fair amount of body and alcohol. Intense cherry red with ruby reflections. Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger The renowned Unico (produced from 80-100 year old vines) is one of the world's most distinctive, singular wines. Always released late, it is incredibly fresh, and capable of 2-3 more decades of evolution. The sensational 1989 Unico Reserva boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as a sweet, fragrant bouquet of plums, black currants, vanilla, caramel, and chocolate. It possesses tremendous density, an opulent, textured, full-bodied palate, great purity, and moderate tannin in the 60+ second finish. It needs another 3-4 years of cellaring.

Rating: 17/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Still-deep crimson, this wine would be difficult to place temporally with the eye alone, though Ribera del Duero produces famously youthful crimson wines. Very distinctive old-fashioned, traditional Vega Sicilia nose which contrasted markedly with the 2002 tasted a few minutes before. Dry on the finish and just very slightly hollow in the middle. Big but not flattering.
