What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

Deep colour. An intense, delicate, subtle and complex nose. Very neat and regular on the palate upon attack leading to volume and a nicely round structure. Highly powerful, great length, dense and purely elegant.

The quality of Château Lafite Rothschild needs no introduction. As early as 1815, Abraham Lawton had already designated it as leader: “I ranked it as being the most elegant and delicate, with the finest body of the three (leading wines)” he qualified in 1855. As to Château Lafite traits shared by all vintage years, it was an enlightened amateur that summed it up best read more...

Editorial Reviews

Opens up with a very deep and brooding nose that is decidely leafy and oaky with competing notes of seaweed lead pencil, cedar, and mineral all over a pool of cassis. Bright in the mouth and still fairly tannic but much more mature than a bottle 2 years ago. Plummy fruit with a very soil driven mid-palate that leads to a finish that's rich in spicy notes and mineral grafite. Still rather stoic though resolving well. the finish is very long yet only hinting and the depth of fruit held in reserve. Needs another 2-3 years before it'll be worth trying again.

Reviews

The 1988 harvest produced Cabernets and Merlots that came out to be very colorful, and structured. This wine was then aged in one-year-old used Chateau Lafite Rothschild barrels before bottling.

Slightly disappointing for Lafite, this has medium body, fine tannins and pretty aromas and flavors of tobacco, cedar and fruit. Though lacking in fruit and tannin concentration, it's elegant and supple, giving plenty of pleasure. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1988 Lafite-Rothschild 6000ml

1988 provided a very hot and dry summer, followed by the same weather in September, which brought the crop to maturity. Cabernets and Merlot came out to be very colourful, and structured.
