What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

It displays a dark garnet color and aromas ofblack plum, cassis liqueur, rose petals, nutmeg and sandalwood. Always a pleasing drink. Alexander is a nice wine for those looking for a cheaper version of a well known wine, but the Napa valley is definitely the better choice. Constant, but not new and different.

Man this wine is sweet. It has a TON of vanilla and sweet minty cedar on the nose. It has a medium bodied, creamy cherry mouthfeel that is almost candied.

Hand of Snooth

Liquid velvet. This wine is unabashedly fruit forward, yet well balanced. I opened a bottle and served with prime rib and chanterelle-truffle risotto. The wine was so delicious I found myself with the empty bottle at my lips, tonguing the last delectable drops out of the bottle in my ice cold garage before dropping the bottle in the recycling.

I would love to find a production wine with a similar flavor profile at a fraction of the price. This is what I always hope to get when buying CA cab.

Each of Silver Oak's two estates – one in Napa Valley and the other in Alexander Valley – is dedicated to producing a single wine. These two Cabernet Sauvignons consistently reflect the very best of their appellations. Dark ruby color and a nose of cassis syrup, chocolate and baking spices. This incredibly concentrated wine has a fruity attack, great body and integrated tannins in the medium length finish. It will continue to improve through 2028 given proper cellaring.

This was a great wine which I tasted in Aug 2008. I decanted the wine for an hour, but estimate that I could have decanted at least another hour.

Ripe plummy fruit with tell-tale dill and coconut from American oak. A good Silver Oak but it is what it is. Not worth the premium when there are somany good Napa cabs.

Wine Advocate ReviewNot surprisingly, my favorite Napa bottling is the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot. Aromas of olive-tinged, creme de cassis intermixed with sweet vanillin and smoky oak lead to a sweet, chunky, ripe, cedary wine with an attractive texture, an expansive, fruit-forward style, and a spicy finish. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

Silver Oak has always been one of my favorites. This bottle gave us a bit of trouble. We opened it on New year's Eve 2008 and uncorked, it smelled of tight, overripe zinfandel. In the glass, it was stringent and peppery, again tasting more like an old vine zinfandel. We decided to give it an hour or so in the decanter and left our glasses to breathe as well. Once we came back to it 1.5 to 2 hrs later, the Silver Oak I know and adore had shone through a bit more. Not the best I have had from them, but solid. Perhaps we opened it a couple years too soon. If you get this and plan to open now, decant it for at least an hour.

Rating: 87/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 126, May/June 2006 ($100) Bright red-ruby. Pungent resiny oak along with currant, dark chocolate and herbs on the nose. Offers a supple texture, but today the fairly intense flavors of cassis, chocolate and mint are squashed under their heavy load of oak, which also dries the finish.
