Name of varietal: Zweigelt

Common synonyms: Rotburger, Blauer Zweigelt

Parentage of the grape: Blaufrankish, Sankt Laurent

History of the grape:  Zweigelt was created in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt at the Institute of Viticulture and Pomology in Klosterneuberg, Austria. It was originally called Rotburger after an area in its home town, but to put an end with confusion over Rotberger, another cross-grape, oenologist Lenz Moser changed its name to Zweigelt in 1975. It was cultivated to create a native Austrian red grape that would be full-bodied, easy to plant, adaptable to cooler local weather conditions and resistant to disease.  The result is a successful, full-flavored and well-structured grape that has become a national favorite that crossed over to other regions with favorable, cool-climate growing conditions.

Characteristics of the grape: medium to full-bodied, deep red, firm tannins, spicy, red plums, red cherry, black pepper, slightly acidic.

  • I've been thinking about wine drinking in 2011 for at least the last few months of 2010. By nature, I'm a huge fan of Barolo and Barbaresco (basically anything Nebbiolo) but I find that my desire to drink what I like, limits me in some ways.  There's only so much money to go around, right? I've spent a lot of time drinking through Italy.  I'd sa... This smells of crushed berries with a touch of fresh juniper and notes of earth, a very light dusting of vanilla, with touches of marzipan and violets. On entry this is soft and broad, fruity and fleshy with bright acid and soft tannins supporting the bright, juicy berry fruited mid-palate. Theres a little spice on the backend and this gains goo... Winemaker's notes: Aromas of sour cherry and black berry mingle effectivelywith a hint of tobacco. Even fairly new in thebottle this wine will pamper your taste buds with anelegant body, well balanced acidity and beautifullyembodied tannnins. It is lovely now but will developwith cellaring. • Schwarz Zweigelt 'W' Red Table Wine 2004

Good, but not what I was expecting in a Zweigelt. Zweigelts are known for being light to medium bodied with a soft mouth feel and dark fruit aromas. W was light bodied with a full, luscious mouthfeel that really opened up 15 minutes after being poured. However, it was heavily oaked like a Napa red, so much so that the oak drowned out most of t...
