Name of varietal: Zweigelt

Common synonyms: Rotburger, Blauer Zweigelt

Parentage of the grape: Blaufrankish, Sankt Laurent

History of the grape:  Zweigelt was created in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt at the Institute of Viticulture and Pomology in Klosterneuberg, Austria. It was originally called Rotburger after an area in its home town, but to put an end with confusion over Rotberger, another cross-grape, oenologist Lenz Moser changed its name to Zweigelt in 1975. It was cultivated to create a native Austrian red grape that would be full-bodied, easy to plant, adaptable to cooler local weather conditions and resistant to disease.  The result is a successful, full-flavored and well-structured grape that has become a national favorite that crossed over to other regions with favorable, cool-climate growing conditions.

Characteristics of the grape: medium to full-bodied, deep red, firm tannins, spicy, red plums, red cherry, black pepper, slightly acidic.

Zweigelt on Snooth

  • My wife and I are hosting a German dinner in about a month.  She has the easy part, coming up with the menu and delivering on her fine cooking.  Wienerschnitzel and Spatzle are the main course, with probable sides of grean beans and such.  My part is to come up with matching beverages.  The beer is easy.  I'll find something good in a small keg ... Light-bodied versatile with all types of light food. I paired it with spinach ravioli and it went as good as wine can go with something that bland. Definitely not a sipper...pair it! In a double blind tasting I would have guessed it was a Beaujolais. Gamay-esque approach with some surprising cognac elements on the nose. Read More

  • Zweigelt Loach IGT Radoar 2007

I just discovered this South Tyrol producer and wine and have become very fond of both. Lovely dark fruits without the weight, making it highly adaptable and easy to enjoy. The Rot (red) IGT (pinot and lagrein, is it?) is also lovely.However...this Loach IGT name has gotten mistakenly translated to naming DeLoach (US) as the producer. The produc... Read More

Very close, tight nose. Ripe plum or cherry. In the mouth, again a single-note plum, still tight but a nice light fresh weight. Soft tannins and low alcohol at 13%. Very good quality but needs time to open. Read More

  • Zantho Zweigelt 2006

I found this wine to have a spicy, red fruit character, typical of Zweigelt. Although this is a lighter style than some other Zweigelts I have tasted, I found it to be pleasurable to drink on its own. Although for a couple years of aging and the wine will develop a much more complex character. Read More
