Zinfandel

Name of varietal: Zinfandel

Common synonyms: Primitivo, Crljenak Kaštelanski (Croatia, believed to be its root), White Zinfandel, Zin, Blush, Zinfendal

Parentage of the grape: Crljenak to Austria to America. In the 1970s, claims surfaced that the Italian Primitivo is likely the same grape as Zinfandel. In 2002, DNA testing proved that California Zinfandel has the same genetic structure as the Croatian Crljenak Kastelanski, which is likely its origin.

History of the grape: Zinfandel was originally brought over to the US from the Imperial Austrian plant collection by horticulturalist George Gibbs in 1820. There are records of a Boston, Massachusetts nursery selling “Zinfandal” vines for sale in the 1830s. During this time it had become a popular table grape in the Northeast. In the 1840s, it was transported to California during the Gold Rush. It became an abundant crop due to the ease in which it’s grown, requiring minimal pruning and no Read more »

Zinfandel on Snooth

  • Limerick Lane 1023 2014

    Snoothrank:

Bright, tart red fruitcherryon entry. Interestingly, enough, the tartness almost suggests citrus, and, going really crazy, orange as much as anything. Some woodiness mid-palate. Medium-bodied. Not much tannin to speak of. A fun, easy-to-drink wine. Read More

  • The Robert Baile 'Black Chicken' was certainly not my favorite, but his ... his Limerick Lane Vineyard Zinfandel was most excellent.  We were at his tasting station towards the end of the event and I don't even know if I tried his Cabernet Sauvignon.  As for the Chateau Potelle, which I barely remember too, but I think I sampled their 2013 Moun... • In 1991 the popularity of Zinfandel wasn’t a speck of what it is today. Wine lovers either didn’t know what it was or didn’t understand the grape. Therefore, in 1991, a passionate group of true believers formed ZAP, Zinfandel Advocates and Producers. This group is made up of winemakers and Zinfandel lovers alike. Their mission is to educate the ... Read More

  • Sonoma Collection Pinot Noir Sonoma District 3 2014

    Snoothrank:

I have a split opinion about this wine. First of all, as a $15-17 Sonoma ... ... more like a Grenache or a Zinfandel than it does a Pinot Noir. It's fairly concentrated, fruit-forward wine with tastes of red fruit, nice acidity, and hints of cherry cola on the nose and mid-palette. As a generic $5 red wine, without distinctive varietal ch... • Earthquake Petite Sirah Lodi 2013

    Snoothrank:

Inky black in the glass. Blackberries, spice, oak lead the way and follow nicely to the palate. This is a mouthful and deservedly so. Firm tannins, full throttled fruit and balanced acidity drive a lengthy aftertaste. 91 points - Drink or hold - Paul Read More

  • We enjoyed a nice 2013 Repris Zinfandel last night after a decent meal at Sandra's parents house.  Her mom, in her mid-80's, now wants to make us one meal a month.  This one was a decent casserole with sausage and potatoes.  At least I didn't find a hair in it this time!  Oh, I've been working on a computer that I will give away at my upcoming M...
