Zinfandel

Name of varietal: Zinfandel

Common synonyms: Primitivo, Crljenak Kaštelanski (Croatia, believed to be its root), White Zinfandel, Zin, Blush, Zinfendal

Parentage of the grape: Crljenak to Austria to America. In the 1970s, claims surfaced that the Italian Primitivo is likely the same grape as Zinfandel. In 2002, DNA testing proved that California Zinfandel has the same genetic structure as the Croatian Crljenak Kastelanski, which is likely its origin.

History of the grape: Zinfandel was originally brought over to the US from the Imperial Austrian plant collection by horticulturalist George Gibbs in 1820. There are records of a Boston, Massachusetts nursery selling “Zinfandal” vines for sale in the 1830s. During this time it had become a popular table grape in the Northeast. In the 1840s, it was transported to California during the Gold Rush. It became an abundant crop due to the ease in which it’s grown, requiring minimal pruning and no Read more »

Zinfandel on Snooth

  • Bedrock Wine Co. Evangelho Vineyard Heritage 2012

    Snoothrank:

Whoa, very fruity on introduction to the tongue--lots of raspberry, some acidic tropical hints like, maybe, papaya, maybe even some citrus. Noticeable sweetness around the edge of the tongue. Not a particularly "jammy" Zin. Medium bodied, easy to drink by itself, but it might be a challenge for some food pairings. US$30.00 from the winery. Read More

  • Renwood Zinfandel Premier Old Vine 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deep ruby in color, intoxicating aroma of dark berries. The taste is incredible full of rich deep flavor of cassis and a bit of spice. The flavor lingers and aftertastes of coffee and a slight floral taste. This is a bold satisfying wine sure to please many Cab, Malbec and other jam packed wine lovers. Read More

  • No pic.  Camera is on IR until I do something about the missing battery ... opened up a 2010 Napa Valley Zinfandel and really enjoyed it.  It seems like it was made from a blend of Dry Creek Valley fruit and Lodi fruit.  Not nearly as tannic or acidic as a DCV example, noticeable berry fruit, but not jammy like a Lodi example.  Looking forward... • Keenan Zinfandel Napa Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Keenan winery is located on Spring Mountain--due west of St. Helena on the Napa ... of the best know AVAs for Zinfandel--Dry Creek Valley and Lodi. This wine is like a 50/50 blend of Zinfandel from DCV and Lodi. You get berry fruit, but nothing like the jammy stuff I seem to get a lot from Lodi. It is not as stark and tannic as a DCV Zin. I...
