Zinfandel

Name of varietal: Zinfandel

Common synonyms: Primitivo, Crljenak Kaštelanski (Croatia, believed to be its root), White Zinfandel, Zin, Blush, Zinfendal

Parentage of the grape: Crljenak to Austria to America. In the 1970s, claims surfaced that the Italian Primitivo is likely the same grape as Zinfandel. In 2002, DNA testing proved that California Zinfandel has the same genetic structure as the Croatian Crljenak Kastelanski, which is likely its origin.

History of the grape: Zinfandel was originally brought over to the US from the Imperial Austrian plant collection by horticulturalist George Gibbs in 1820. There are records of a Boston, Massachusetts nursery selling “Zinfandal” vines for sale in the 1830s. During this time it had become a popular table grape in the Northeast. In the 1840s, it was transported to California during the Gold Rush. It became an abundant crop due to the ease in which it’s grown, requiring minimal pruning and no Read more »

Zinfandel on Snooth

  • I tend to like a substantial bottle.  Nice and heavy.  I like natural ... a while back was Rockfish Zinfandel by Dan Cederquist.  The picture below is not my own, but found by for me by google.  I think I still have the bottle at home somewhere.  It is heavy and nicely engraved with the images and logo while the rest is printed.  &nbs Read More

  • Rodney Strong Estate Vineyards Knotty Vines Zinfandel Northern Sonoma, Sonoma County 2012

    Snoothrank:

Black fruit and earth are strong on the nose. Blackberry preserves and leather palate with cinnamon and clove spice, a good dose of candied black currant, well integrated oak, bramble fruit and vanilla. Good clean finish is long and simple with powdered sugar and cream to accompany the overriding blackberry flavors on the palate. Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs 2004

    Snoothrank:

Very attractive clear red plum color. Blackberry aroma, but with some volatility. Amazingly smooth on entry. Then some serious red fruitcherry and red raspberry. Not as tannic as most Lyttons. In fact, relatively little tannin. Slight tartness on the back of the palate. This one may be at its peak if it hasnt already passed it, but a wond... Read More
