Zinfandel

Name of varietal: Zinfandel

Common synonyms: Primitivo, Crljenak Kaštelanski (Croatia, believed to be its root), White Zinfandel, Zin, Blush, Zinfendal

Parentage of the grape: Crljenak to Austria to America. In the 1970s, claims surfaced that the Italian Primitivo is likely the same grape as Zinfandel. In 2002, DNA testing proved that California Zinfandel has the same genetic structure as the Croatian Crljenak Kastelanski, which is likely its origin.

History of the grape: Zinfandel was originally brought over to the US from the Imperial Austrian plant collection by horticulturalist George Gibbs in 1820. Zinfandel on Snooth

  • Dry Creek Vineyard Heritage Vines Sonoma Zinfandel 2012

    Snoothrank:

Boy was this good. Dry Creek has mastered zins over the years and Heritage Vineyards has some of the best zin stock ever. Dense, black and brooding this exudes varietal excitement. Blackberry, damson plum, oak, pepper, spice and briary notes lead to a palate that follows the nose well. This leads to a medium to full bodied tannic structure that ... Read More

  • Old Soul Zinfandel Old Vine 2012

    Snoothrank:

A real surprise. I bought several of these a few years ago just for nights of bbq, several friends over and what not. This remained buried in the cellar until last night. Good idea - glad I didn't plan it that way. Large blackberry and briary along with red plum and dirt really explode out of the glass. A leggy, smooth flowing juice flows a leav... Read More

  • I remember mine completely, just  like it was yesterday, all except for the producer which I think was Tyrrell, but after 40+ yrs the name has faded.  What remains vivid is the experience.  The place was in Freemantle, just outside Perth, in 1976.  Hungry for a good meal, myself and 2 friends chanced upon this spot.  It was owned by a WW2 refuge...
