(aka. Pansa Blanca)

Also known as Pansa Blanca, Xarello is used only in Catalonia, Spain, where it is used in the production of Cava sparkling wines. The variety produces a typically acidic wine that is perfect for use as a base for these traditional method sparkling wines. The variety is also the best grape used in the small, but highly-regarded D.O. of Alella, where the Parxet winery makes its acclaimed Marques de Alella Classico from Xarello.

In your Catalan homeland, you exist peacefully as simple Pansà Blanca, living a safe and benign life. But in the company of two other sparkling Caballeros, señores Macabeo and Parellada, you have ventured out into the world, and leave your mark via your more adventurous alter ego, Xarel-lo!

2008. Straw yellow. Tropical fruits hit you straight away. Green apples, lemon and lime. Slight kind of buttery aroma lurking in the background - yeastyish. Smooth and creamy first in texture with great acidity. Interesting coupage - very pleasant. Excellent for a fideua or paella or even to sit around with friends and drink and chat. A snip at ... I have come across some in restaurants but they either don't list the brand/vineyard or I forget what it was. And of course it's not li... Read More

  • It’s a while since I went around wineries in a bikini. Actually, I think the Sitges Mostra de Vins might be a first. To roll just 100m from the surf’s edge, throw on a kaftan and visit some of the best producers in the Penedes region has to make the Sitges Wine Show a wine-and-beach lovers’ paradise. This resort, 30 km south of Barcelona, de... Read More
