Read moreBurgenland is a region in what is present-day Austria. It's actually a place in Austria where they grow a lot of red grapes. However, there is a large shallow lake called Neusiedlersee which causes morning mist, promoting the growth of botrytis on the grapes, and consequently allows them to produce great sweet wines. In fact, it's one of the privileged areas of the world where the botrytis is fairly regular, much like it's sister region on the eastern part of Hungary, Tokaj. So if you've got what's called a TBA, that means that the grapes were pretty much entirely botrytized when picked. Very generally speaking, troken = dry, beeren = berries, auslese = really ripe and with botrytis. In theory, the wine will outlive you. But all this is general. You don't mention the producer. And you don't mention the provenance. If the wine has been kept on someone's window sill, who knows what you can expect. If it's from a good producer and has been stored well - and continues to be stored well, it should be just fine to drink now or for many years to come. Don't have it with dessert. That wine should be its own dessert. Have it with nuts if you must, but toasted nuts (because they're just always better). Or have it with cheese - a strong one like an aged parmesan, a good blue, or something of that nature. Or have it with sausage! Or some game bird. Or by itself. The wine may be made from riesling, olaszrizling, chardonnay, pinot blanc, gwertztraminer, or a few other grapes, but they're all good.    (hide)

  Sweet mineral nose. Tart acidic almost sparkling front end. Super sweet and balanced with thick honey but not cloying. Amazing balance.

  Feiler-Artinger Ruster Essenz Ausbruch Jonathan 2005

  Snoothrank:

  Rich, sweet nose. The botrytis is clear, but not overpowering. Its very rich and sweet, and although there's a lot of acid, i dont think it stands up to the sugar, so it came across a little flabby. Nice finish on green apples.

Happened to pair over the course of the evening with french bread, a charcuterie plate, gouda, and a salad of boston lettuce with green zebra tomatoes, avocado, and an olive oil & salt dressing. The wine stood up to all of the foods, though arguably didn't mesh well with the tomato. Certainly not its fault, though. As dry rieslings go this is pretty good. A little green on the nose. It's tough to put any distinct notes to it, though I believe I'm getting a bit of green apple. Ha, just re-read the label and it mentions green apples -- subliminal advertising or accuracy? Worth noting that it stands on its own without food, though the finish has a little bit of that green apple bite that makes me think that, if I had to choose one, I'd take it with food over without. Speaking of the label, it also says "the perfect everyday white." Not sure I'd go that far, but it's definitely serviceable once in a while. I like it, but don't want to drink it again tomorrow. Not one to write home about, but at the same time if I saw the bottle again in a store I'd probably grab it on recognition.    (hide)
