Parentage of the grape: unknown
History of the grape: Viognier is thought to be an indigenous grape of Croatia that was brought to the Rhone in France by the Romans. A fun story that may or not be true is that it was intended for Burgundy, to Beaujolais, and was packaged with Syrah vines that were intercepted by the Medieval French equivalent of the Jesse James gang around Condrieu in Rhone and there it stayed. It likely got its name from the Roman outpost Vienne. It was once widely planted in France, but because it is tricky to grow, once Phylloxera struck, it was only replanted in a few places. Condrieu is the only Rhone appellation that is 100% Viognier. In other areas, besides rare varietal releases, small amounts of it are used as a blending component to red Syrah for body. It eventually made its Read more »

  • Church and State Wines Trebella 2014

The 2014 vintage Trebella won triple platinum in its home land and justly so... ... on well-ripened Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne with typical Tisane (Herb tea) floral notes on the nose in addition to cake spice. Entry is warm (14% alcohol) and peach-like with a zesty, spicy and medium finish. More dense and less thirst-quenching than 2013... Read More

  • Rockpile Winery Syrah Madrone Spring Vineyard 2010

Initial tartness on the tip of the tongue surprises me a bit. That diminishes quickly, and is followed by a somewhat gamey sensation. Another surprise is sweetness that pops up towards the back of the tongue/palate. Fairly full-bodied, but not monstrous by any calculation. Nice because it does not blow you away with berry or cherry flavors. Read More

  • Imagery Estate Winery Viognier Russian River Valley 2013

Clear, very pale yellow in the glassvery close to white. Very floral, perfumey nose with the slightest hint of spice that I would associate with Gewurztraminer. Sure enough, lots of white stone fruit flavor on the tip of the tongue that morphs into a melon suggestion at the back. Also, a bit of spritz on the tip of the tongue. Good acid back... Read More

I really do not care for Viognier.  Well this is the last one that Imagery will be sending to me.  The initial reaction is that it is another Viognier--very flowery nose wth, maybe, a hint of Gewurztraminer, stone fruit flavors--nectarine, plum--with, agian,... One of the reasons for ...
