It likely got its name from the Roman outpost Vienne. It was once widely planted in France, but because it is tricky to grow, once Phylloxera struck, it was only replanted in a few places. Condrieu is the only Rhone appellation that is 100% Viognier. In other areas, besides rare varietal releases, small amounts of it are used as a blending component to red Syrah for body. • OT, tell me you weren't sick when I stopped by on Sunday!  And get ... and a bottle of 2011 Jemrose Viognier for my niece.  On Xmas day, it's roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, so I'll take the 6th bottle (or is it 7th?) of Cam Hughes Lot 35 Yountville Cab--we're having one a year from the case to see how it changes--and either a 2006 Sodaro Fe... Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viognier 2013 A unique blend of two grapes that would never marry in their homeland of France, this California offering has shown what a beautiful intermingling can produce. • Back at the home front.Well, the Morroccan dinner last Thursday at Ojai ... enjoy a glass of Viognier--which was, happily, not as flowery as most Viogniers I have previously had--and an excellent "no sulfites added" Syrah from the Sebastiano Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills.  As more and more locals arrived we moved around the room and settled towar... Read More

  • Church & State Wines Viognier 2013

    Snoothrank:

Another fine Church and State Wines offering... with a fine domestic flower scent (Wisteria, petunia, for example) with some spice such as nutmeg. The palate receives a princely flow of cake spice, peach, vanilla (light oak) and tropical fruit with good viscosity, creaminess and no bitterness - almost like petit Chateau Grillet. 14.3% alcohol a... • Yalumba Viognier South Australia the Y Series 2012

    Snoothrank:

Sunflowers and hay on the nose with a touch of honey and cream. Seemingly sweet approach, mostly from the dried apricot and honey flavors, there's a good mouthfeel here, puckering acidity to balance the alcohol, a good dose of honeydew melon and lemon, and a touch of lemongrass on the finish. • Yalumba Shiraz Viognier Hand Picked Eden Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Big red and black fruit aromas, heat and spice in equal measure. Palate has an explosive amount of fresh acidity, black pepper, bold tarry notes, black fruit, a hint of eucalyptus, and a long finish with licorice and a touch of cream. Read More

  • Church and State Wines Trebella 2013

    Snoothrank:

Again, with these white Rhone-style whites from British Columbia Canada, there is intriguing Camomile Tea and peach with hints of pear, kiwi and other soft fruit. Good viscosity (mouth feel) with peach and some almond-like bitterness on the finish. Lacking only a bit of purity. Excellent value. 89 points Read More

  • Since its orginal planting and first harvest in 1993 at Horton Vineyards in Charlottesville, Virginia (Monticello Appelation)- Viognier has risen not only to become the top grape in Virginia- but the wines produced from it have become some of the first to recognized as "competitive" with wines from the rest of the world. One of the reasons for ...
