A fun story that may or not be true is that it was intended for Burgundy, to Beaujolais, and was packaged with Syrah vines that were intercepted by the Medieval French equivalent of the Jesse James gang around Condrieu in Rhone and there it stayed. It likely got its name from the Roman outpost Vienne. It was once widely planted in France, but because it is tricky to grow, once Phylloxera struck, it was only replanted in a few places. Condrieu is the only Rhone appellation that is 100% Viognier. In other areas, besides rare varietal releases, small amounts of it are used as a blending component to red Syrah for body. It eventually made its Read more »

Viognier on Snooth

  • Nice location, VV!  On the side away from the road, too.  Lots of ... of 2014 Jemrose Egret Pond Viognier from LastBottle.  I've paid $25 a bottle for any wine of theirs I like if I buy a case, no shipping because I pick it up when visiting DCV, and I usually mix in a little of the Viognier even at that price, as it's one of the few Cal viogni... • Workman Ayer Ipso Facto Central Coast California 2014

Rich and fruity aromas of dried apricot and white peach on the nose with floral elderflower and sweet spice aromas. This is thick and emollient in the mouth with more floral notes of rose petal and white blossom, soft lychee and melon fruit notes and good minerality towards the mid palate and a soft lemon cream towards the finish. Very nice. Read More

Delicious vanilla cream pie notes of white peach, ripe red apple and hazelnut on the nose. In the mouth this is full and emollient, with toasty apple and pear fruit playing against peach and apricot, wrapped in a cream cheese envelope and finishing with a nutty memory. Read More

Rarely does anything in ... ... varieties, especially Viognier and Gewurztraminer, tend to have higher tannins in the skins so in these cases additional skin contact could bring in bitterness which will then have to be fined out later through PVPP, Gelatin, or Isinglass treatments. • Vinovino - that Qupe is pretty good. So is their Viognier. Actually, I think their Viognier is one of the best I've had anywhere - but it's a low bar.As far as the Baga goes, a few years ago I had dinner with Luis Pato, who's kind of like the world ambassador for Baga. It's an interesting grape. Kind of like Bobal or Kadarka or back in the day, ... Read More

Very palealmost watery lookingyellow color. Bright refreshing tropical fruit nose. Lots of fruit on entrygreen apple, citrus, table grapes, pineapple, melon. No indication of RS on the label, but I have to believe there is, at least, 1%, or so. Very tart makes this a very refreshing, although not terribly sophisticated, summer wine. Read More
