Parentage of the grape: unknown
History of the grape: Viognier is thought to be an indigenous grape of Croatia that was brought to the Rhone in France by the Romans. A fun story that may or not be true is that it was intended for Burgundy, to Beaujolais, and was packaged with Syrah vines that were intercepted by the Medieval French equivalent of the Jesse James gang around Condrieu in Rhone and there it stayed. It likely got its name from the Roman outpost Vienne. It was once widely planted in France, but because it is tricky to grow, once Phylloxera struck, it was only replanted in a few places. Condrieu is the only Rhone appellation that is 100% Viognier. In other areas, besides rare varietal releases, small amounts of it are used as a blending component to red Syrah for body. It eventually made its Read more »

  • Sandhill Viognier Blanc 2006

Just like the label said, apricot and peach notes were readily apparent. Medium-full fruit flavour, leaning more to peach than apricot, some grassy/herbaceous infusion. Nice flinty finish. Definitely opened up once it warmed up a degree or two - be patient, wait a short while after removing from your cooler. $29.99 Cdn at liberty wine. A few buc... Read More

  • The Lane Vineyard Ravenswood Lane Viognier 2006

Initially seems a bit overoaked on the nose and palate, but settles nicely and ... a hint of sugar, this is a viognier with a capital V -- a pleasurable drink, but, I think, not terribly food-friendly. It might work with, e.g., a lobster thermidor or some other kind of rich seafood with a brandy cream sauc Read More

  • Terra Blanca Viognier 2005

Nice enough nose, with apricot, peach and citrus notes. Same on the palete. The wine's alcohol level was a bit high for a white, at least for me at 13.5%. Or perhaps it was just me noticing the alcohol. I still liked the wine, but couldn't rate it higher. Read More
