Parentage of the grape: unknown
History of the grape: Viognier is thought to be an indigenous grape of Croatia that was brought to the Rhone in France by the Romans. A fun story that may or not be true is that it was intended for Burgundy, to Beaujolais, and was packaged with Syrah vines that were intercepted by the Medieval French equivalent of the Jesse James gang around Condrieu in Rhone and there it stayed. It likely got its name from the Roman outpost Vienne. It was once widely planted in France, but because it is tricky to grow, once Phylloxera struck, it was only replanted in a few places. Condrieu is the only Rhone appellation that is 100% Viognier. In other areas, besides rare varietal releases, small amounts of it are used as a blending component to red Syrah for body. It eventually made its Read more »

Viognier on Snooth

  • Pipestone Vineyards Viognier Blanc 2006

Pipestone is probably the most "down to earth" winery I've had the pleasure to ... to ... place to visit. The Viognier is a nicely balanced wine with a wide range of flavors. I always seem to find peach and honey, but regardless it is excellent and as a teacher I love to support excellenc Read More

  • Thought I should introduce myself properly.. I'm new to snooth, found it almost by accident this afternoon; however, I have heard about it before.A little about myself: I've enjoyed wine as a meal accompaniment for years, since my early teens, which I guess comes from my parents. As long as I can remember, a bottle of red has always graced the... Read More

If you like Viognier, go buy this. Beautiful floral nose. Dry. None of the flab you get in a lot of Viognier. This was even drunk a bit warmer than cellar temp, so I know there is no flab. Read More

  • Porter Creek Viognier Russian River Valley Timbervine Ranch 2006

It's rare that I'm absolutely stunned by a white wine. I've found most viogniers to be lacking depth, a little bit too heavy on the citrus, and perhaps too acidic. The 2007 Porter Creek Viogner has complexity, isn't grapefruity, and isn't acidic... but is still light and has a beautifully clean finish. It would pair beautifully with simply prep... Read More

  • When the guys at Snooth recently introduced the concept of page ownership on ... on ... Syrah, Tempranillo, Viognier, Zinfandel. This shows is a wide diversity in climates and soils that permit so many different grape varieties to be grown. The soil content varies dramatically throughout the valley but is mostly a volcanic base. Unlike Europ... Read More

Very nice texture of Viognier blended with black fruits, meaty quality of Syrah. I tried an Australian version of Cote Rotie; no competition there. Great balance of acidity, tannins and flavors. Drinks very well now, but I believe an extra time could add this one more special notes,, Read More
