Vermentino

Common synonyms: Rolle, Rollo, Pigato, Malvasoie de Corse, Favorita, Favoria, Malvasie, Formentino

Parentage of the grape: native of Liguria (though originally thought to come from Spain)

Whatever the story, no doubt the grape likes the Mediterranean climate, and thrives in places like Corsica (where it is the signature varietal, called “Malvasoie de Corse”), Sardinia, coastal Tuscany, Southern France (where it is called “Rolle”) and Spain. It eventually made its way to the New World as these varietals have been known to do. In 2009, President Barack Obama presented a bottle of North Carolinan Vermentino to Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi during an official visit. His reaction is not Read more »

  • Bibi Graetz Casamatta NV

    Snoothrank:

I bought this wine by mistake the other day. I thought I was picking up the Casamatta 2011 Tosscan IGT, but when I unpacked at home, I saw that this Casamatta is a non-vintage "Rosso," which I would interpret to mean "red wine." It has a "woody/viney" nose, and on the palate it has noticeably less fruit and acid as the vintage Toscana IGT. Al... Read More

We intersperse the flights between apps, first course, main course and dessert. In a restaurant setting it's hard to get 8 glasses set up at each diner and still have room for d... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Nice little Italian white blend of vermentino and verdicchio. Easy drinking, light and crisp with some light lemon, a touch of apricot, medium acidity and a short finish. This is a food friendly wine that went well with our chicken and dumplin's. Read More

  • Anything under 10-1/2% and you are wasting your money thinking it is wine. Just ... ... Had a nice RYME Cellars Vermentino "Hers" last week that came in at 11.2% which was pushing the envelope but that's about as low as I would go. Otherwise the wine loses texture and a lot of it's personality and becomes  too green. I mean that Vermentino had... Read More
