Common synonyms: Rolle, Rollo, Pigato, Malvasoie de Corse, Favorita, Favoria, Malvasie, Formentino

Parentage of the grape: native of Liguria (though originally thought to come from Spain)
History of the grape: Little concrete history is known about Vermentino except that it has recently been identified as the same grape as Pigato from Liguria, which would put rumors of its Spanish migration to that place to rest. It was likely consumed as far back as the 13th century. Whatever the story, no doubt the grape likes the Mediterranean climate, and thrives in places like Corsica (where it is the signature varietal, called “Malvasoie de Corse”), Sardinia, coastal Tuscany, Southern France (where it is called “Rolle”) and Spain. It eventually made its way to the New World as these varietals have been known to do. In 2009, President Barack Obama presented a bottle of North Carolinan Vermentino to Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi during an official visit. His reaction is not Read more »

  • Sorry Greg, it was a pic stolen from the internet. At our tastings it's ... people brought starters, two Vermentino, two Sangiovese, two Nebbiolo and two Mystery Wine. Nice little Italian white blend of vermentino and verdicchio. Easy drinking, light and crisp with some light lemon, a touch of apricot, medium acidity and a short finish. This is a food friendly wine that went well with our chicken and dumplin's. Read More

Otherwise the wine loses texture and a lot of it's personality and becomes  too green. I mean that Vermentino had... Read More

  • NG, Cork taint happens the moment to cork is put in the bottle. It has nothing ... poor photo. Then we went to Vermentino. My RYME seemed a bit off and was lacking it's normal bracing acidity. Palate came in kinda flat. The Macini more than made up for it and had a great mineral/chalky aspect to the finish.Next was the Mystery Wines, a couple o... Read More
