Name of varietal: Verdelho

Common synonyms: Breval. Often confused with Gouveio in Portugal and Verdejo in Spain, though it is not related to any of these. There is speculation that it is the same grape as Verdello in Italy.

Parentage of the grape: believed indigenous to Madeira island, Portugal

History of the grape: Verdelho has existed on the island of Madeira in Portugal at least as far back as the 15th century. It is both a grape and a style of one of the island’s fortified Madeira wines, falling in the middle between Sercial and Bual in terms of richness, with more acidity and smokiness. But the Phylloxera outbreak destroyed most of the once-prevalent vines, and only a fraction of it was replanted on the island. In the 1970s, a movement to grow more traditional grapes revived plantings on Madeira. Elsewhere in mainland Portugal and other parts of the world, it has since been cultivated for still white wines that are best consumed young.

AUD$17. The initial pressings are made to obtain free run juice that has ... ... ... higher for a white, but Verdelho is a grape with higher sugar levels. Fresh mature aromas of passionfruit, oxidised Fuji apple, crushed dill, and I get an additional sense of chalky water. A medium-bodied white wine, dont be fooled by the initial sensation of... Clear but incredibly pale yellow in the glass. Interesting, it almost looks like water. Herbal, vegetative nose reminds me more of a sauvignon blanc. Very refreshing on the palate--initially a melon flavor but then lot's of lemon. Excellent acid gives it the refreshing quality. US$11.69 at Total WIne. Read More

I need to examine this AVA more closely (although I have indeed driven through it). Ab initio, I was in love with the tangerine, citrus nose flecked with certain green herb notes... clean and fresh! Slightly bitter on the finish, but the entry is clean, cleansing and satisfying. This is an excellent wine with verve, style and good old American... Read More
