Verdejo

Name of varietal: Verdejo

Common synonyms: Palido

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Rueda, Spain

History of the grape: Verdejo has existed in the region for centuries, thought to have first been planted by the Moors who settled there in the 12th century. But like many indigenous white grapes in Spain, it was mostly wiped out during the late 19th century Phylloxera crisis, and replanted with other grapes from hybrid vines that are easier to grow, like Palomino. However, in the 1970s, Bodega Marques de Riscal saw the potential in reviving traditional local grapes and replanted Verdejo in Rueda. Other bodegas followed and today, Verdejo is the signature grape of the region. Since barrel aging masks the inherent bright flavors of the varietal, most of the wines are produced to be consumed young and fresh.

Characteristics of the grape: bright, fresh, acidic, lemon, green apple, pear, kiwi, grassy, fennel, mushroom.

  • Terravista Vineyards Fandango 2013

    Snoothrank:

This wine is the colour of many Rías Baixas wines I've enjoyed over the years ... years ... the credit-worthy Verdejo component. Good acidity and more peach on the palate with a fruity, lingering finish. Some bitterness on the follow-through, but this is a most elegant wine to make an Iberian proud. 88 points. Grab these while you ca Read More

  • Altozano Verdejo & Sauvignon Blanc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Quire pure on the nose with hints of herb stem and earth framing sweet cognac tinged notes of earl grey tea and raspberry compote. The oak gains a little more intensity but aromatically this remains wonderfully focused and bright. On entry there a big rush of raspberry fruit followed by bristly yet well covered tannins and a nice dose of earthy... Read More

  • Bokisch Verdejo Lodi California 2013

    Snoothrank:

I "discovered" Bokisch several years ago. . .And, have commented on their wines ... previous reviews . . .The Verdejo is a "new" addition to Markus and Liz's library of Spanish varietals. . And, well-worth a "blind" purchase. . .Very much in keeping with their other fine wines! Especially with tapas and other Spanish cuisine. . .!!! I suggest... Read More

  • This summer I'm trying to help you out of your seasonal drinking ruts. So ... it's mainstay variety: Verdejo. Long a blending grape with little following out side of its home, Verdejo has begun to attract the attention of drinkers in the know as of late. It's a fascinating grape that offers up nutty aromas, I find almond and coconut often, tha... Read More
