Name of varietal: Verdejo
Common synonyms: Palido
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Rueda, Spain
History of the grape: Verdejo has existed in the region for centuries, thought to have first been planted by the Moors who settled there in the 12th century. But like many indigenous white grapes in Spain, it was mostly wiped out during the late 19th century Phylloxera crisis, and replanted with other grapes from hybrid vines that are easier to grow, like Palomino. However, in the 1970s, Bodega Marques de Riscal saw the potential in reviving traditional local grapes and replanted Verdejo in Rueda. Other bodegas followed and today, Verdejo is the signature grape of the region. Since barrel aging masks the inherent bright flavors of the varietal, most of the wines are produced to be consumed young and fresh.
Characteristics of the grape: bright, fresh, acidic, lemon, green apple, pear, kiwi, grassy, fennel, mushroom.

  • Gran Familia Verdejo Privada White Imported-Spanish 2010

Melon, pigskin, and wet stone aromas greet the nose, along with a spark of flint. A lean, modest wine with nice tart melon flavors laid over a fairly mineral base. This is a bit austere in the mouth, with some quince notes building on the back end and through the fairly long, and fairly intensely flavored finish that shows some peach character. ... Read More
