Verdejo

Name of varietal: Verdejo

Common synonyms: Palido

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Rueda, Spain

History of the grape: Verdejo has existed in the region for centuries, thought to have first been planted by the Moors who settled there in the 12th century. But like many indigenous white grapes in Spain, it was mostly wiped out during the late 19th century Phylloxera crisis, and replanted with other grapes from hybrid vines that are easier to grow, like Palomino. However, in the 1970s, Bodega Marques de Riscal saw the potential in reviving traditional local grapes and replanted Verdejo in Rueda. Other bodegas followed and today, Verdejo is the signature grape of the region. Since barrel aging masks the inherent bright flavors of the varietal, most of the wines are produced to be consumed young and fresh.

Characteristics of the grape: bright, fresh, acidic, lemon, green apple, pear, kiwi, grassy, fennel, mushroom.

  • Bodegas Protos Verdejo Rueda 2010

    Snoothrank:

This one had a nice nutty, almondy nose. Very cloudy appearance. On the palate, very soft fruit. The nuttiness continues with hints of sugar and passion fruit. Not quite acidic enough for me but this is a very solid wine. Read More
