Name of varietal: Verdejo
Common synonyms: Palido
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Rueda, Spain
History of the grape: Verdejo has existed in the region for centuries, thought to have first been planted by the Moors who settled there in the 12th century. But like many indigenous white grapes in Spain, it was mostly wiped out during the late 19th century Phylloxera crisis, and replanted with other grapes from hybrid vines that are easier to grow, like Palomino. However, in the 1970s, Bodega Marques de Riscal saw the potential in reviving traditional local grapes and replanted Verdejo in Rueda. Other bodegas followed and today, Verdejo is the signature grape of the region. Since barrel aging masks the inherent bright flavors of the varietal, most of the wines are produced to be consumed young and fresh.
Characteristics of the grape: bright, fresh, acidic, lemon, green apple, pear, kiwi, grassy, fennel, mushroom.

  • Solar de la Vega Rueda 2004

A very New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc -like Verdejo out of the handful i've had: lots of tropical notes like mango, guava, pineapple floating in the nose that carries over into the light bodied mouthfeel. The zingy acidity is felt mostly in the end... Read More

  • Tapena Verdejo 2007

This is a clear yellow wine, with a nice fruity smell. I am a dedicated under-$20 wine buyer, and this under-$10 wine really impressed me. Citrus on the nose and at the finish, an absolute crispness that plows through food to refresh the palate. Despite seeing other reviews that say it has a long finish, I thought it was delightful for having... Read More

  • Vine age has to be one of my favorite, controversial arbiters of wine quality (next to native yeasts). I strongly believe that my favorite region of the wine world, Chateauneuf du Pape, benefits greatly from the century old Grenache vines that dug their roots in the ground sometime before World War One. Well how old is old? According to Lenz Win... Read More

I love this wine. Beautiful aroma... think white flowers, with a lemony citrus note to it. Some tropical fruit flavors, with the perfect amount of acidtiy. It feels like early summer when ever you drink Pariente... and comparing what you get for the price it is a great bargain. Read More
