Trebbiano

Name of varietal: Trebbiano

Common synonyms: Ugni Blanc, St. Emillion, Thalia, White Hermitage, Castelli, Lugana, Malvasia Fina, Santoro, Spoletino, Tribbiano

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to central Italy

History of the grape: Trebbiano is one of the world’s most widely planted white grape varietals, not only for wines, but brandies and vinegars, including balsamic styles. It is believed that it originated in central Italy, but quickly spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world as empires and colonies were established. But despite its widespread plantings and usage, besides some fine releases from around the Abruzzo region (that often have the name of the varietal in its DOC title) it is rarely given credit since it’s often a minor blending grape, or appearing as one its many aliases.

Characteristics of the grape: light-bodied, crisp, high acidity, minerally, lemon, rosemary

Regions where the grape is currently important: You name, they grow it.

  • I've been catching up on the Snooth Wine Tips that appear in my in-box, and this one intrigued me:Chardonnay is #1 grape in California, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and French Colombard.Well, I don't think that Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon being the two most planted grapes in California is terribly surprising. But #3 is French Colombard???... • I'm making a lasagne bolognese for a dinner party (the whole deal from scratch, including pasta) and I want to get an interesting Italian red to pair with it. I'd love to get a Barolo but the cost is a bit prohibitive...I'm like to keep it at about 15 a bottle or less. Also maybe a light Italian white to have with appetizers. Unfortunately I live... • San Giusto a Rentennano Trebbiano-Malvasia Blend Vin Santo del Chianti 1997

    Snoothrank:

Ruby/velvet rope in color. Alluring cherry perfume with gentle earth & shale. Very elegant with a silky texture and firm but smooth tannins. Perfect balance with dried red cherry and blackberry on the palate. Just a great pleasure to embibe as it showed new notes through the time in glass. A study in class and femininty. Read More

  • Riunite d'Oro Moscato Trebbiano NV

    Snoothrank:

This is my favorite Moscato. It is reasonably priced and available in most grocers that carry the Riunite brand here in Ohio. I have had trouble locating it in the Philly area however. Most of the wine stores there seem only to carry the Lambrusco. Read More
