Trebbiano

Name of varietal: Trebbiano

Common synonyms: Ugni Blanc, St. Emillion, Thalia, White Hermitage, Castelli, Lugana, Malvasia Fina, Santoro, Spoletino, Tribbiano

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to central Italy

History of the grape: Trebbiano is one of the world’s most widely planted white grape varietals, not only for wines, but brandies and vinegars, including balsamic styles. It is believed that it originated in central Italy, but quickly spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world as empires and colonies were established. But despite its widespread plantings and usage, besides some fine releases from around the Abruzzo region (that often have the name of the varietal in its DOC title) it is rarely given credit since it’s often a minor blending grape, or appearing as one its many aliases.

Characteristics of the grape: light-bodied, crisp, high acidity, minerally, lemon, rosemary

Regions where the grape is currently important: You name, they grow it.
