Touriga Nacional

Name of varietal: Touriga Nacional

Common synonyms: Turiga, Tinta de Dao, Touriga Fina, Bical Tinto, Mortagua, Touriga Antiga

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Dao region of Portugal

History of the grape: Touriga Nacional is produced as a still table wine, but is also one of the most important grapes in Port. There is historical evidence of it dating back to the Middle Ages, when England first made its longstanding business partnership with Portugal. In the 13th century, England’s relationship with France became shaky and as access to French wines got more remote, the English realized their new Portuguese friends would be an excellent source for wine. In 1703, the two countries signed the Treaty of Methuen, which gave Portugal discounts on English textiles and England discounts on Portuguese wine. This is the reason why so many Port Quintas (estates) still have English names.

Touriga Nacional is notoriously prone to low yields. Read more »

Touriga Nacional on Snooth

  • Quinta Do Portal Colheita Douro 2008

    Snoothrank:

This blend is made of grapes that you might normally associate with port. Very dark inky purple color, and a really different nose of leather, spice, stewed plum/prune, and herbaceous/leafy notes. Also had a distinct and unique odor we both (independently!) identified as freshly baked sweet dinner rolls or pretzel buns! Medium bodied with notes ... Read More

  • Warre's Warrior Specail Reserve Ports NV

    Snoothrank:

This wine has lightened since the '90s - not to its detriment or improvement, just different. It still has the black fruit note, and finishes with a bit of mineral that can stand up to most strong cigars. Read More

  • I've not visited Texas, but from the temperatures above I'm sure it ... weather. E.g., Vermentino, Touriga Nacional, Durif, Grenache, Nero d'Avolo. Then you have the problem of marketing. • Duas Quintas Vinho Tinto Douro Do 2009

    Snoothrank:

Clear and transparent douro red (granat with a purple nuance- probably due to the rather young age), very consistent.Intense and complex at smell, some chemical aromas but mainly red fruits. Perhaps too alcoohlic.Acid, but at the main time very warm and consistent at taste, very equilibrated. Read More

  • Touriga Nacional is the Native Queen of portuguese red grapes. Alone or married with other autoctones varieties, can give deep and mouthfull wines while young, and velvetyness passing the years. Try a Douro Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional 2004, 96 rated by RP. Enjoy.
