Touriga Nacional

Name of varietal: Touriga Nacional

Common synonyms: Turiga, Tinta de Dao, Touriga Fina, Bical Tinto, Mortagua, Touriga Antiga

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Dao region of Portugal

History of the grape: Touriga Nacional is produced as a still table wine, but is also one of the most important grapes in Port. There is historical evidence of it dating back to the Middle Ages, when England first made its longstanding business partnership with Portugal. In the 13th century, England’s relationship with France became shaky and as access to French wines got more remote, the English realized their new Portuguese friends would be an excellent source for wine. In 1703, the two countries signed the Treaty of Methuen, which gave Portugal discounts on English textiles and England discounts on Portuguese wine. This is the reason why so many Port Quintas (estates) still have English names.

Touriga Nacional is notoriously prone to low yields. Read more »

Touriga Nacional on Snooth

  • Luis Pato Colheita Seleccionada 2011

    Snoothrank:

70% Baga, 30% Touriga Nacional Deep, leathery and subtly spicy with notes of white pepper and cardamom on the nose, this gains layers of complexity with air running the gamut from pressed flowers to vegemite, peppercorn to sweet pipe tobacco. A bit firm in the mouth, though without the explosive acids Baga sometimes have. Still this is bright a... Read More

  • Cockburn's Fine Ruby Port 2005

    Snoothrank:

Apparently there is a great variance when it comes to ruby port wines. Although the first scent and initial moment of taste tempted a fruity lusciousness, such a hint was plowed by a speeding locomotive of dry, wood flavour. If woody is for you, Cockburns. If you eat enough sugar, this might counterbalance. As for me, pass. Read More

Hottest dried part of the Douro Powerful balsamic, animal and gamy aromas are well balanced by nutty, chocolate oak notes on the nose. • Quinta de la Rosa La Rosa 2011

    Snoothrank:

60% old vine vineyard field lend, 40% Touriga nacional Smokey and fairly oaky on the nose with a nutty and expensive aroma. A big wine on entry, round and rolls into the mouth like the changing tide. There are great acids supporting a bright juicy bramble berry punch on entry followed by lots of tannin, dry and a little stern on the palate, tho... Read More

  • Touriga Nacional is the Native Queen of portuguese red grapes. Alone or married with other autoctones varieties, can give deep and mouthfull wines while young, and velvetyness passing the years. Try a Douro Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional 2004, 96 rated by RP. Enjoy.
