Touriga Nacional

Name of varietal: Touriga Nacional

Common synonyms: Turiga, Tinta de Dao, Touriga Fina, Bical Tinto, Mortagua, Touriga Antiga

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Dao region of Portugal

History of the grape: Touriga Nacional is produced as a still table wine, but is also one of the most important grapes in Port. There is historical evidence of it dating back to the Middle Ages, when England first made its longstanding business partnership with Portugal. In the 13th century, England’s relationship with France became shaky and as access to French wines got more remote, the English realized their new Portuguese friends would be an excellent source for wine. In 1703, the two countries signed the Treaty of Methuen, which gave Portugal discounts on English textiles and England discounts on Portuguese wine. This is the reason why so many Port Quintas (estates) still have English names.

Touriga Nacional is notoriously prone to low yields. Read more »

Touriga Nacional on Snooth

  • Porca de Murca Douro 2013

    Snoothrank:

Purpleish coloring with burgundy/red hues....looks just like fresh grape juice and has wee tiny bubbles upon pouring! Aromas of cassis, Earthy berries, soil and pith...dry overall. As this warms up, the flavors are dry, fruity, tobacco leaf, cherry, root spices and perhaps some dry premium cocoa. Creamy smooth mouthfeel and highly drinkable, ... Read More

  • Niepoort Port Blend Porto Ruby NV

    Snoothrank:

Another tasting from Lunch. Very impressive for the pricing - $6 per glass. Interesting too, rather dry and not quite as sweet as other Ruby's; Has a bit of alcohol burn, but overall, very satisfying with notes of Raisin, Strawberry, and Bing Cherry with a balance of Earthiness and Herbs and long finish. Perfect for everyday/every evening NV Ru... Read More

  • If you can include French, you can get your distributor's rep to bring some ... which comes in a Cab Sauv/Touriga Nacional blend or a straight Touriga) that are good and pretty large production for well under $20.  Vinho Verde in the summer from Broadbent or a number of other makers can be under $10. I'm focusing on things that a large distribu... • Hi everybody I'm a small store owner at the edge of the rust belt, my customers rarely spend over $20 for a bottle, and I am looking to improve my selection a bit beyond what is here now. If you have a minute to help a guy out let me know what you think are the best wines that usually sell for $20 or less. Thanks ! Read More

  • Another Costco wine.  This is a blend of 80% Baga and 20% Touriga Nacional.  It is quite light bodied for a red.  Initial flavors sugeest dried red fruit, but "suggest" is the operative word.  No tannin puckerines to speak of.  Very light on the acid.  Overall, an uncomplicated, easy-to-drink wine (and reasonably priced), but nothing for a wine ... • Touriga Nacional is the Native Queen of portuguese red grapes. Alone or married with other autoctones varieties, can give deep and mouthfull wines while young, and velvetyness passing the years. Try a Douro Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional 2004, 96 rated by RP. Enjoy.
