Touriga Nacional

Name of varietal: Touriga Nacional
Common synonyms: Turiga, Tinta de Dao, Touriga Fina, Bical Tinto, Mortagua, Touriga Antiga
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Dao region of Portugal
History of the grape: Touriga Nacional is produced as a still table wine, but is also one of the most important grapes in Port. There is historical evidence of it dating back to the Middle Ages, when England first made its longstanding business partnership with Portugal. In the 13th century, England’s relationship with France became shaky and as access to French wines got more remote, the English realized their new Portuguese friends would be an excellent source for wine. In 1703, the two countries signed the Treaty of Methuen, which gave Portugal discounts on English textiles and England discounts on Portuguese wine. This is the reason why so many Port Quintas (estates) still have English names.
Touriga Nacional is notoriously prone to low yields. Read more »

  • Hi everybody I'm a small store owner at the edge of the rust belt, my customers rarely spend over $20 for a bottle, and I am looking to improve my selection a bit beyond what is here now. If you have a minute to help a guy out let me know what you think are the best wines that usually sell for $20 or less. Thanks ! Read More

  • Another Costco wine.  This is a blend of 80% Baga and 20% Touriga Nacional.  It is quite light bodied for a red.  Initial flavors sugeest dried red fruit, but "suggest" is the operative word.  No tannin puckerines to speak of.  Very light on the acid.  Overall, an uncomplicated, easy-to-drink wine (and reasonably priced), but nothing for a wine ... • Quinta de Foz de Arouce Vinho Regional Beira Atlantico Tinto 2011

Earthy, mushroomy nose. Quite a light-bodied red wine. Some dried red fruit flavors on the tip of the tongue, but they are fairly sedate. No tannin to speak of. Also light on acid. An uncomplicated, easy to drink wine that will offend nobody, but it wont thrill you, either. Read More

  • Everyone, hope you got something out of all this. We definitely had a great ... ... Negrette, Blaufrankisch, Touriga Nacional and Aglianico with a bonus pour of their Old Vine "F"Red which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Touriga Nacional. They had to pen in the "F" due to some kind of infringement lawsuit.  Biggest surprise - w... Read More

  • Thanks Larry, I've seen you on Berserkers (where I lurk more than I post), ... ... 2012 Blaufrankisch, 2012 Touriga Nacional and a 2011 Aglianico. All were really good but the Negrette and the Aglianico were outstanding and reasonably priced, nothing over $36.  Next up was our 1 pm appointment at Demetria. I think the drive up to estate might ... Read More

  • Had a great first full day here in south central California. Started off with a very good breakfast at the ForFriends B&B in Santa Ynez. Too early for any of the tasting rooms to be open so we headed down to Jalama beach for some salt air and scenery. Beautiful beach with some interesting campsites and about a half dozen surfers enjoying some mo... Read More

  • I'm with GregT that any sweet wine needs to have some zip.  Botrytis ... Cao, 25% Tinta Madeira, 25% Touriga Nacional, 25% Sousão in the 2012 vintage).  I toy with the idea of finding a "real" port with the same great acidity, but then I realize I can get plenty of Rockpile and I'm taking no chances.  I have had a little Port that I like, but ... • On and off with differing frequency mention is made on these boards of garnacha as a choice for certain palates, and in certain contexts. Most of the mention here is pretty generic, and doesn't get down to any level of detail.Would like to suggest we take up the subject of wines from this grape with better focus. Where is good, who makes the goo... Read More

  • Touriga Nacional is the Native Queen of portuguese red grapes. Alone or married with other autoctones varieties, can give deep and mouthfull wines while young, and velvetyness passing the years. Try a Douro Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional 2004, 96 rated by RP. Enjoy.
