Torrontes

Name of varietal: Torrontes (of Argentina, not the unrelated variety from Galicia which is also often referred to as Torrontes)

Common synonyms: Malvasia, Torrontel, Torrontel Riojano

Parentage of the grape: Torrontes is really three closely related grape varieties -- Torrontés Riojano, the most common, Torrontés Sanjuanino, and Torrontés Mendocino. The most important and common one is Torrontes Riojano. All three are the product of a crossing between Muscat of Alexandria and Criolla Chica (Mission).

History of the grape: Torrontes is Argentina’s only truly indigenous grape. One of its parents, Criolla Chica, was probably brought by missionaries. It has become Argentina’s signature white variety.

Characteristics of the grape: Torrontes Riojano is the most distinctive and worthwhile sibling of the three. It is highly aromatic -- floral, spicy, and exotic.

Regions where the grape currently is important: La Rioja and Salta in Argentina

A tantalizing bouquet of orange blossom, fine herbs, and wood smoke gives way to touch of sweetness and a bitter if not altogether unpleasant finish. (AV 85, http://argovino.com/?p=159) Read More

  • Santa Julia Tardio Reserva 2011

    Snoothrank:

Where so many late-harvest dessert wines are cloyingly sweet and syrupy, this torrontes tends toward the lighter side in both taste and feel. The main note is apple, which starts out softly in the bouquet, like apple butter, and then gains a bit of green-apple bite in the mouth. Not a big finisher, but crisp and easy to drink. • Loca Linda Torrontés Premier L 2011

    Snoothrank:

La Rioja is one of the biggest winemaking provinces in Argentina, but its wines rarely make it to American tables. This still rarer liter deserves to it starts with floral and smoky aromas, then has a nice combination of acid and sweetness with strong citrus flavor. (AV 86, http://argovino.com/?p=817) Read More

  • Loca Linda Torrontés 2010

    Snoothrank:

An drinkable liter from La Rioja, with a bit of butterscotch hiding behind an otherwise tart wine. The bouquet is a little faint, but some sloshing will reveal some lychee or rambutan. Definitely best chilled. (AV 85, http://argovino.com/?p=820) Read More

  • Torrontes is an exceptional white wine quite unlike other European white varietals. It's nose has very floral notes, with roses and some stone fruit. Its mouthfeel is very balanced, quite dry but with a richness and a fine bouquet. The other week I drank Quara Torrontes from Felix Lavaque Cafayate Valley, Salta Argentina( which from what I'v...
