Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Europe, not known exactly where
History of the grape: Origins of Tempranillo are murky. It could be indigenous to the Spanish countryside, or it could have been brought there by the Moors from somewhere else unknown. There are theories it’s a clonal offshoot of Pinot Noir, and though it shares some characteristics, it has been proven the two are not related. But regardless, Tempranillo, which means “early little one” for its penchant for early ripening, has become widely cultivated all over the world in many styles.
It is the leading red grape in Spain, where it is called by many names according to where it’s grown. It is most distinguished as the main grape of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, where, particularly in the higher altitude vineyard locations, it is produced Read more »

  • Bodegas Torres Duero Penamonte 2005

2005 Rosado -Barrel Sample- 13.5% Georgoues pink, the nose is of vanilla, cherry, light spice, flowers and strawberry. In the mouth Spices, cherry and minerals. Very nice can’t wait to see final product. One note the color is intense, and in some ways has more in common with Pinot Noir than with a Rosado wine. Only 4hours of skin contact to achi... • Bodegas Torreduero Toro Peñamonte Crianza 2001

Reserva 2001 14.5% Color is dark and brooding. A bit closed down at first the nose shows vanilla oak, coffee and anise seed. In the mouth big tannins show that this needs time to calm down. For now the fruit is hidden with light mint and a beautiful streak of minerality that runs through it. The best part is how well intergrated the oak is, not ... Read More

  • Racimo de Oro Valdepeñas Gran Reserva 1996

Deep dark color that is surprisingly transparent. The nose is showing some secondary development with rich deep blackberry jam, chocolate, anise, and light wood. The nose is so rich I don't want to leave the glass, and I keep thinking back to my mom canning jam in the fall. In the mouth it has chalky tannins on the finish yet is overall a softer... Read More

  • Bodegas Casado Morales Rioja Nobleza 2005

Falling into what I guess you have to call the Beaujolais Noveau category of wines, this can't have had much more than a month to be produced. The color is deep purple and dark. Nose shows banana, strawberry, liquorice, and barrel room. Very perfumey and actually something I want to keep my nose in. Tannins show a medium strength with a medium a... Read More

  • Bodegas Remirez de Ganuza Rioja 2001

So far this wine has only been released in the states. 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 80% French oak, 20% American Oak. Very clear in color it is a deep burgundy color. The nose shows raspberry, light vanilla oak, light barnyard, anise, cinnamon, and mint. Ever evolving with a bit more air I started to smell milk chocolate, deep cherry, currant,... Read More

18 months French Oak Deep color leaning towards purple. The nose is complex and ever evolving. Minty herbal notes, deep cherry, raspberry, chocolate and light wood. In the mouth the tannins are soft but firm coating the mouth with a background of medium strong acidity. Flavors of chocolate, wood, rich cherry, raspberry, liquorice, and smoke. Wood... Read More

  • Rioja Bikaña Rioja Crianza 2000

Cherry cinnamon nose with light anise. Very light burgundy color. In the mouth the tannins are light and it shows a medium to light acidity. Refreshingly crisp flavors of cherry, light chocolate and light wood all mingle on the palate. 3.5/5 [NR] Read More

  • Bodegas Torreduero Toro Peñamonte Tres Meses de Barrica 2003

Deep red with purple hints. The nose shows a light creamy oak, and deep red fruit of reaspberry and blackberry. Strong, firm tannins and a medium acid give it a strong mouthfeel. Cherry accented with spiced oak fill out the palate with some other red fruits hiding behind the strong tannins. Definatly might improve given a 3-4 year rest. Very nic... Read More

  • Bodega Balcona Partal Bullas Crianza 2001

60% Monastrell, followed by Tempranillo, Cabernet Suavignon, Syrah, and Merlot Deeper color than the 2002 with a darkness that is hard to see into. The nose two seems more complex(maybe time in bottle) showing a herbal quality of mint, green pepper and layered black fruit background. The palate still has firm tannins and acids dominating but the... Read More

  • Bodega Balcona Partal Bullas Crianza 2002

60% Monastrell the rest, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot The nose right away show oak, and smokey fruit both dried and fresh. The color is intense and deep ruby. In the mouth it has big tannins with a firm oak backbone. While flavors of cherry and black fruits mingle. Still a bit tight but a really fun wine, and one that I wou... Read More
