Tempranillo

Common synonyms: Tinto Fino, Ulle de Llebre, Tinto del Pais, Aragones(z), Cencibel, Tinto del Toro, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Riojano, Valdepeñas

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Europe, not known exactly where

History of the grape: Origins of Tempranillo are murky. It could be indigenous to the Spanish countryside, or it could have been brought there by the Moors from somewhere else unknown. There are theories it’s a clonal offshoot of Pinot Noir, and though it shares some characteristics, it has been proven the two are not related. But regardless, Tempranillo, which means “early little one” for its penchant for early ripening, has become widely cultivated all over the world in many styles.

It is the leading red grape in Spain, where it is called by many names according to where it’s grown. It is most distinguished as the main grape of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, where, particularly in the higher altitude vineyard locations, it is produced Read more »

  • Bodega Dominio Buenavista Tempranillo Vino de la Tierra Contraviesa Alpujarra Veleta 2006

    Snoothrank:

Perhaps a bit of reduction here then turning a bit spicy with menthol and green tobacco notes accenting the sweet jamy black raspberry fruit, lots of spice emerges in the glass and there is a rising smokiness. Spicy wood on the attack, a bit too woody and the tannins are woody too, hot, not that well integrated, spice with restrained fruit. An s... Read More

  • Bodega Dominio Buenavista Tempranillo Vino de Mesa de Andalucia Veleta Tempranillo Nuevo 2007

    Snoothrank:

A bit low intensity but the big black fruits are lurking and are amply accented with smoke, salt, and slate tones. Sweetly fruited with a great crisp quality that keeps this very focused. Still a touch estery but the dark red fruits are nice and pure, no wood here! Juicy blackberry fruit emerges with a minor herbal tone adding balance. Alovely m... Read More

  • Bodega Dominio Buenavista Tempranillo Vino de Mesa de Andalucia Veleta Tempranillo Nuevo 2007

    Snoothrank:

Smells a bit sweet with a touch of butter over a base of grenadine but without much complexity or intensity. Full of ine berry fruit a veritable melange of warm strawberries, raspberries and wartermelon that has a soft edge of minerality. A rich rose with relatively high alcohol but expressive and very good in it's style 88pts. Read More

  • R. López de Heredia Tempranillo Blend Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia 1964

    Snoothrank:

This opens with very bad bottle stink, all sour and dirty game. With ari this settles into a fine leather, earth groove with occasional flashes of fine, crystalized raspberry fruit and nuanced tones of coffee cream and menthol. Bright and flesh with decidedly dark fruit that veers into the black cherry realm. There is a lovely background note of... Read More

  • Viña Tondonia G.r. Lopez de Heredia 1968

    Snoothrank:

An evolved nose greets the nose with seaweed and iodine tones to the fore. There is a nice seared cherry tone but the nose is more about the musky tones of men's cologne, wood spice and coriander notes, and dusty gravel. In the mouth there remains perfectly ripe fruit that offers a fine bitter/sweet contrast with the slightly candied tart red c... Read More

  • Vina Bosconia 1970

    Snoothrank:

What a superb nose, the purity of the raspberry fruit here is compelling but the notes of hung game, limestone, smoldering grapevine and the classic background notes of tobacco, vanilla, herbs, and citrussy fruit are really intriguing. Sweet and rich in the mouth this retains almost chunky fruit that is deep, fresh and layered. It is big and eve... Read More

  • R. López de Heredia Tempranillo Blend Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia 1970

    Snoothrank:

This has a fantastic nose with sweet plums, toasted spices popping in a hot cast iron skillet, coffee tones and an enchanting candied violet/rose tone. The wine moves through stages alternately gaining a more roasted, caramelly tone and then reverting to cinnamon and tobacco spice dried raspberry, either way it smells great. In the mouth it is r...
