Tempranillo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Europe, not known exactly where

History of the grape: Origins of Tempranillo are murky. It could be indigenous to the Spanish countryside, or it could have been brought there by the Moors from somewhere else unknown. But regardless, Tempranillo, which means “early little one” for its penchant for early ripening, has become widely cultivated all over the world in many styles.

It is the leading red grape in Spain, where it is called by many names according to where it’s grown. It is most distinguished as the main grape of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, where, particularly in the higher altitude vineyard locations, it is produced Read more »

Tempranillo on Snooth

  • Miguel Torres Ribera del Duero Celeste Crianza 2005

    Snoothrank:

  • Ochoa Red Tempranillo Garnacha

    Snoothrank:

Dark purple red color with an aromatic nose of ripe red and black fruit. Palate delivers a little earth and light tobacco notes and more of the ripe fruit found in the bouquet. Dry, medium-bodied, medium juicy tannins, just the right amount of acidity to balance out the big fruit, and a long mouthwatering finish. All in all, a great price for a... Read More

  • Pintia Toro 2005

    Snoothrank:

I, unfortunately, am no professional reviewer. I love this wine. It has a nice colour and texture; smooth. It has a lovely flavour, sweet but not overpoweringly sweet like an iced wine can be. It's able to complement desserts without drowning them out, or enjoyed after dinner on its own. Read More
