Parentage: Offspring of Dureza & Mondeuse Blanche
Aliases: Shiraz, Hermitage, Antourenein Noir, Candive, Marsanne Noir...
Grape Color: Black
Regions: Rhone (France), California AVAs, Australia
Type(s) of Wine the Grape Produces:

Syrah. Shiraz. Sirac. Schiras. Marsanne Noir. The names can go on endlessly to describe one of the most powerful red wine-producing grapes in the world.

The irony here is that Syrah’s origins could give Carmen Sandiego a run for her international wallet. Syrah’s deepest rooted history lies in the Rhone region of Southwestern France, as the wines that made this varietal famous were from hermitage, located in northern Rhone. The name “Shiraz,” however, gained popularity in Australia where this dark-skinned varietal has long been heavily planted. The birthplace of Syrah is still unknown, with many legends linking together both its aliases, suggesting origins in Iran, Rhone, and Australia.

  • Building a cellar isn’t always about laying down the most expensive wines ... it deserves to move out of Syrah’s shadow. While most Petite Sirahs lack some elegance, they make up for it with bold, gutsy fruit. With age, the wines gain an expansive softness that really shows how cellaring can enhance the texture of a wine. Never the most complex... Read More

  • BTW, those wines are also worth comparing to certain French wines depending on ... that is predominant (e.g. Syrah).  Other than Washington, Idaho, Ontario, up-state New York and other similar locations, comparisons with US wine does not seem to work well (heat unit issue, mostly).I'd be interested in a review of these wines mentioned above as... • Boekenhoutskloof the Chocolate Block 2017

The Boekenhoutskloof Chocolate Block presents well in the glass - quite opaque red. On the nose, there is a hint of white pepper, pomegranate, and lots of sweet cherry and (perhaps) raspberry. Entry is rewarding with a hint of pepper and a burst of cherry cola and dark chocolate. Finish is long and satisfying with some vanilla and residual ta... Read More

  • I like the spiciness and boldness of Syrah. I haven't tasted many, but the majority were from California, Russian River Valley. I would like to try a French Syrah. Any recommendations on a rocky and floral wine>?
