Seyval Blanc

(a.k.a Seyval)

Well suited to cool climates, this popular French-American hybrid is the second most planted vine in England, behind Müller-Thurgau. Reliably productive and an early ripening (usually mid to late September) Seyval Blanc is made into crisp white wines, with no foxy flavor, or sometimes into off-dry versions where the tart nature of the variety is balanced with residual sugar. Some producers have employed such enhancing techniques as barrel fermentation and/or aging, and malolactic fermentation to improve the quality of its sometimes neutral character and lack of intensity. The fruit is highly susceptible to botrytis bunch rot.

Sadly, Seyval Blanc (like all other hybrid varieties) was outlawed for “quality wine” designation by vinifera-obsessed European Union authorities, ostensibly, for quality reasons. This is a controversial issue for the English wine industry, where the variety has proved to Read more »

  • Camel Valley Brut Cornwall 2006

This is the kind of bottle which makes England noticed as a real competitor in the sparkling wine game. Although pale straw in appearance, its very light, sweet, but very fresh. Has a brief sharpness of citrus before a big peachy and sweet green apple biscuit finish. Excellent stuff. Read More

  • Gouveia Vineyards Stone House White NV

A Semi-sweet wine that combines classic Chardonnay and crisp Seyval Blanc and Vignoles. Flavors of bisquity breads, light melon fruit that blend superbly from careful aging in mostly steel tanks. Was very interseting on the nose and pleasant to taste. I liked it! Read More

  • Jones Winery Pure Rosé NV

This is a drier Rosé than one usually finds, and I liked it the more because ... ... The wine is a blend of Seyval Blanc, Cayuga, and Cabernet Franc, and in addition to providing the color, the Cab Franc gives it that earthy depth that is both unexpected and intriguing. This is the first year Jones has produced this wine, but I suspect it w... Read More

  • Jones Winery Stonewall White NV

Like the Jones Winery Pinot Gris, the color is a pale yellow, but the Stonewall White is slightly deeper in color. The nose is fruity with notes of berries and light citrus notes, perhaps grapefruit. In the mouth, the citrus and berries blend nicely together, with some light notes of tartness from the citrus and a touch of acid to help balance... Read More

  • I recently visited two wineries on a trip through Kentucky and into Indiana. ... with Chardonnay grapes and Seyval Blanc grapes. It is kind of a Chardonnay light. The other wine I liked was their 2005 Family Reserve. This wine is a blend of reds. I failed to ask about the makeup of the blend. Upon returning home, I did not find this wine... Read More

I really enjoyed this blend of Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc. I know alot of folks out there probably turn their noses up at wines and wineries of the Midwest. I found this wine to be effervescent with a nice citrus flavor. The wine was good and crisp. Huber's indicates this as a dry wine. I think of it in terms of an off dry. A very nice wi... Read More
