Seyval Blanc

(a.k.a Seyval)

Well suited to cool climates, this popular French-American hybrid is the second most planted vine in England, behind Müller-Thurgau. The variety is also popular in Canada and the eastern U.S., particularly New York State. Reliably productive and an early ripening (usually mid to late September) Seyval Blanc is made into crisp white wines, with no foxy flavor, or sometimes into off-dry versions where the tart nature of the variety is balanced with residual sugar. Some producers have employed such enhancing techniques as barrel fermentation and/or aging, and malolactic fermentation to improve the quality of its sometimes neutral character and lack of intensity. The fruit is highly susceptible to botrytis bunch rot.

Sadly, Seyval Blanc (like all other hybrid varieties) was outlawed for “quality wine” designation by vinifera-obsessed European Union authorities, ostensibly, for quality reasons. This is a controversial issue for the English wine industry, where the variety has proved to Read more »

Seyval Blanc on Snooth

  • Frontenac Point Vineyard White Blend Finger Lakes Frontenac White NV

    Snoothrank:

The Frontenac White (Seyval Blanc) is a very nicely balanced white wine that is not overly dry. This wine is a medium bodied, white wine that is crisp, and refreshing with what I found to be a semi-dry to a dry wine with a slight citrus taste. I could taste a green apple flavor and possibly some sort of melon. The finish of the Frontenac Whi... Read More

  • Estate Wine of Jersey Clos Vintage 2010

    Snoothrank:

When I was recently on the island of Jersey I visited the La Mare Wine Estate [ www.lamarewineestate.com],did the tour, tasted some of their wines, and then decided to have this one with my lunch in their fine restaurant. After all,if it was good enough to be served to Her Majesty the Queen on her official visit to the island,it was certainly good... • Hudson-Chatham Seyval Blanc Hudson River 2010

    Snoothrank:

A little toasty on the nose with some licorice and hawthorn aromas over modest melon and pear fruit. This is very bright with huge acids up front lending this a really juicy feel. Light-bodied and fresh, this delivers clear, clean flavors of watermelon rind, lime and slightly pineapple-like fruit flavors. The finish is refreshing in a very limea... Read More

  • Benmarl Winery Seyval Blanc 2010

    Snoothrank:

Fairly earthy on the nose with some wheatgrass notes over steely mineral, a hint of melon and notes of baked peach. Bright and fresh on entry, this is rather exuberantly styled with bright acidity and a nice medium-bodied feel that supports lime-sicle flavors backed up with a touch of melon. Fresh and fruity. Better on the palate than the nose, ... Read More

  • Emark just wrote about a Barbera/Ruby Cabernet blend, which reminded me of some ... ... Pinotage, Marechal Foch, Seyval Blanc, Muller-Thurgau, etc.  I've had some wines made from these grapes (Pinotage from S.A., Marechal Foch from the Pacific NW) and they didn't really impress.  But the wines we love--pinot noir, Cab sauv, for Californians Pet... • this isn't really a complaint, more of an observation.  i am not ashamed to say that i mostly drink "every day" wines.  by the use of this phrase, i mean wines that i buy on a regular basis that fit wihin my personal pocketbook parameters.  on a practical level, this means that i'm just not going to be buying many wines that cost above $30.  why... • Rock Stream Semi Dry Cayuga White 2008

    Snoothrank:

Cayuga White, along with Seyval Blanc two of New York's finest and most underrated white wine grapes. This is a lot lighter bodied than a Riesling but has a nice complexity, green apples, golden raisins, and a touch of honey. Finishes quick and light. Very good 88/100I might add that I tried about 8 or 10 of their wines about a year ago, and the... Read More
