Seyval Blanc

(a.k.a Seyval)

Well suited to cool climates, this popular French-American hybrid is the second most planted vine in England, behind Müller-Thurgau. Reliably productive and an early ripening (usually mid to late September) Seyval Blanc is made into crisp white wines, with no foxy flavor, or sometimes into off-dry versions where the tart nature of the variety is balanced with residual sugar. Some producers have employed such enhancing techniques as barrel fermentation and/or aging, and malolactic fermentation to improve the quality of its sometimes neutral character and lack of intensity. The fruit is highly susceptible to botrytis bunch rot.

Sadly, Seyval Blanc (like all other hybrid varieties) was outlawed for “quality wine” designation by vinifera-obsessed European Union authorities, ostensibly, for quality reasons. This is a controversial issue for the English wine industry, where the variety has proved to Read more »

  • Wollersheim Winery Prairie Fumé 2013

I've been drinking this wine for nearly two decades now and have as yet to not be satisfied. Wonderful orchard florals with whisps of apple, spice and cardamom on the nose leading to a fruit drive body finishing with great minerality and acidity. Refreshing and mouthwatering. • Banner Elk Seyval Blanc NV

Very pleasant North Carolina Seyval Blanc. Reminds me of a mini Reisling, some floral notes, a touch of sweetness, slight apricot, not much acidity but a decently balanced white wine. This paired very well with crab cakes and snow peas. Read More

  • Lovingston Seyval Blanc 2012

Heady tropical aromas of pineapple, mango and banana warm into juicy floral bliss. Crisp, minerally and just a touch acidic. Tropical notes aren't my favorite so I'm unlikely to purchase a bottle of this, but it's a good example of a varietal somewhat particular to the Eastern US. Read More
