Sémillon

Common synonyms: Wyndruif (South Africa)

Parentage of the grape: undetermined, likely native to Bordeaux and/or surroundings

History of the grape: Little is documented about the early years of this grape, which is surprising due to its distinguished popularity in the regions where it is grown. It has been used in quality production in France, in the areas in and around Bordeaux for centuries. It is there that it is found in elegant dry white wines, most often blended with Sauvignon Blanc. But perhaps even more importantly, its predisposition for Botrytis cinerea (a.k.a. “noble rot”), which has an astounding effect on the grape (as long as it is healthy), pinpointing its sugars and aromas for the Cadillac of sweet wine, Chateau d’Yquem of Sauternes. These wines can take long cellar aging and are some of the most sought after and expensive wines in the world. In more accessible forms, it is found in the late harvest dessert wines of lesser grade Sauternes (which are still Read more »

  • Yeah! It is oyster season in my town. Pick a peck in about 30 min. Best oysters in the world. No bias, no kidding. Wine = anything that is white, dry, French, and Loire or Champagne with an exceptional Chardonnay or Chablis admitted, meeting of course the French criteria. Notice the "spikes".  You will never see those on a restaurant oyster. The... Read More

  • Another successful Old Vines Offline Saturday night. 12 winos, 18 open bottles, ... was tasty as was the Kalin Semillon. The restaurant worked great and they invited us back, weird I know. The addition of the ping pong table was strong! Props to the Stonekings for representing SoCal and Mike Dildine for making the trek up the coast. Congratulat... Read More

  • Chateau Rahoul Graves Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

Call it a holdover from student days and wage slavery, but I still rejoice when a gem is found hidden away in the stacks... Chateau Rahoul (Dourthe stable) Blanc is just such a bauble...the scent evokes the Sauvignon Blanc more with gooseberry and lemon grass, with a nice acidic entry and more gooseberry, grass and green fruit on the palate. Gre... Read More

    Snoothrank:

The 2013 edition of Domaine de Chevalier's Clos des Lunes (Lune d'Argent) white ... with a creamier mouthfeel (Semillon dominates) than most other similar Bordeaux Blancs. Some almond astringency on the finish, but showing structure and elegance. Good value. 90 point Read More

  • Chateau Olivier Blanc Grand Cru Classe 2013

    Snoothrank:

Quite a serious wine is the 2013 Olivier; there are the usual grassy, pear and lemon rind notes on the nose, with a clean, acidic entry dominated by lime citrus on the palate - perhaps with a dollop of ripe pear. There is some almond bitterness on the finish, but this will soften in a year or two. Will last several years but quite hedonically ... Read More

  • Chateau la Garde Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

For several years now, I have been buying a few Chateau la Garde Blanc, and the wine never seems to disappoint; the 2013 edition is weighty with its backbone of Sauvignon Gris, and has a grassy nose followed by mouth cleansing acidity and delicious lemon-lime flavours on the palate. This is a very fine wine for the price and will last 5-10 more... Read More

  • We talking about the striped bass with butter, lemon, capers and anchovies ... ... a Domaine de Chevalier SB/Semillon blend from Graves would work just fine with the seabass, too. If Chablis I'd prefer some wood in its history, as JD seems to indicate. Otherwise a bigger Cote d'Or white, too.But champers is always an easy choice. I'd prefer a ... Read More
