Common synonyms: Wyndruif (South Africa)

Parentage of the grape: undetermined, likely native to Bordeaux and/or surroundings
History of the grape: Little is documented about the early years of this grape, which is surprising due to its distinguished popularity in the regions where it is grown. It has been used in quality production in France, in the areas in and around Bordeaux for centuries. It is there that it is found in elegant dry white wines, most often blended with Sauvignon Blanc. But perhaps even more importantly, its predisposition for Botrytis cinerea (a.k.a. “noble rot”), which has an astounding effect on the grape (as long as it is healthy), pinpointing its sugars and aromas for the Cadillac of sweet wine, Chateau d’Yquem of Sauternes. These wines can take long cellar aging and are some of the most sought after and expensive wines in the world. In more accessible forms, it is found in the late harvest dessert wines of lesser grade Sauternes (which are still Read more »

Sémillon on Snooth

  • Bizoe Henrietta Franschhoek 2014

Lemon and melon notes on the delicate nose with intoxicatingly thick fruit. Medium bodied in the mouth, bordering on medium-light and continuing with the melon notes and a touch of persimmon. Towards the finish this turns quite creamy and buttery with a lingering note of peach. Read More

  • Growing up fishing from boats off the coast of Santa ... de Chevalier sauvignon blanc/semillon blend). Barracuda is a tricky customer, with strong flavor and toxins to deal with, and I usually marinated the hell out of it (sometimes with red wine) and BBQ'd it. Ling cod cried out to me back then for a good chardonnay,  whether Chablis or that f... Read More

  • Going back to the Lingcod story I hinted at in the other thread, here's how that went...I just remember trying Lingcod years ago at some place like King's fish house, and then never seeing it again. I'd even read fish reports in the newspaper and hardly see any caught except sometimes a few in Oxnard, etc. Seems like they are mostly caught off o... Read More

Pretty, clear yellow color. Somewhat fruity and floral nose. Similarly, fruity on the tonguegreen apple, kiwi. Sufficiently acid to make this a refreshing wine. Were having grilled trout for dinner tonight. I think a fruit-based side might make this wine sing. Read More

  • It's supposed to be raining like crazy, but, so far, it's been ...  I think this Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend will be fine with grilled trout. Oh, wow.  A very user friendly wine.  Big fruity/floral nose.  On introduction I'm getting serious fruit--green apple, kiwi, ripe peach.  Nice acid tartness makes this very refreshing.  Somethiing of a... Really nice white Bordeaux blend of Semillon and Sauv Blanc. This has a deep yellow color in the glass. There's a nice hit of butterscotch and caramel on the nose. In the mouth there is lush notes of ripe pear, honeysuckle, a bit of that butterscotch, nice acidity, a nice mouth coating affect and a medium finish. Read More

  • And if you will permit me a tiny bit of thread drift: While we were in Mexico, ... ... was a Mexican Chard/Semillon split, my wife had a Chilean SB.  Both were pretty good, but I'm not running out to buy any--it just wasn't the right place to be drinking and evaluating wine.  Markups in the restos that had wine were pretty fair, but with beer...
