Common synonyms: Wyndruif (South Africa)

Parentage of the grape: undetermined, likely native to Bordeaux and/or surroundings
History of the grape: Little is documented about the early years of this grape, which is surprising due to its distinguished popularity in the regions where it is grown. It has been used in quality production in France, in the areas in and around Bordeaux for centuries. It is there that it is found in elegant dry white wines, most often blended with Sauvignon Blanc. But perhaps even more importantly, its predisposition for Botrytis cinerea (a.k.a. “noble rot”), which has an astounding effect on the grape (as long as it is healthy), pinpointing its sugars and aromas for the Cadillac of sweet wine, Chateau d’Yquem of Sauternes. These wines can take long cellar aging and are some of the most sought after and expensive wines in the world. In more accessible forms, it is found in the late harvest dessert wines of lesser grade Sauternes (which are still Read more »

  • Damn, a guy would die of thirst waiting for a recommendation from youz ... do ... do OK on your own.FWIW, the Semillon went very well with grilled Ahi, last night, and I'm sure it would have went well with your tuna melts.Last summer I had a Rosé of Syrah from Enkidu, and I have to say it was probably the best rosé I've had in the past few yea... • A busy week, traveling every sweltering day within Greater Tokyo or to ... 8 ... 8 Estate of Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. Probably in something like an 80/20 proportion. Possibly in the $10~20 range, depending on where you buy it.Not a bad call. Perhaps just a tad too much RS for me since I like beverages tarter than most, but that... Read More

  • Lock & Worth Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon 2014

This Bordeaux-style is perhaps the most singular I've ever tasted, and not ... the exact percentage of the Semillon component, I'd guess at least 20-25% given the smoky nose and subdued fruit - subdued, that is, even for this kind of blend. The palate is teasingly high in acidity and includes a touch of saltiness - almost like a Picpoul de P... Read More

  • Mcwilliam's Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2007

This well-priced aged, oaked Semillon from the Hunter Valley in NSW is in an older style, but remains its delicious self; for an 8-year old wine, there is a bright, wildflower nose with a hint of dandelion - very inviting. On the palate we receive a hefty dose of lanolin and wood (but not of the dull variety) with pineapple, kiwi, grapefruit. ... Read More
