Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. This noble grape is also successfully grown in Washington State and in New York on Long Island. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

  • I'm not sure that extravaganza is the right word, Al.  We had a ... ... Robin's Apsara wines (Sauvignon Blanc and two Syrahs) and the Volume II Elementary CS.  Outthere happened to pick up some wines on the way over and everybody was curious about the Arbe Garbe white blend.  So, he generously opened it up for us to taste. The visit to the Outt... • Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc California 2013

    Snoothrank:

Not the body of previous vintages, though the aromatics are still very good. Lemongrass, apple, a touch of stone fruit and citrus. The juice nips at the throat and finishes with an acidic, juicy and mouthwatering finish. Drink last year. Paul 87 points Read More

  • Schug Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma Coast 2015

    Snoothrank:

Floral nose of wild flowers with some intriguing herbals coming through like tea leaf and grass with some peach and pineapple fruit. This is more about the mouthfeel than the acidity in the mouth, with some good fullness in the mouth and distant notes of grapefruit and gooseberry especially towards the finish. Read More

  • Sidewood Mappinga Sauvignon Blanc Adelaide Hills 2013

    Snoothrank:

Mellow green apple, pear and lemon aromas with light vanilla notes. This is tart and zesty on the attack, delivering loads of fresh citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit before it really starts to show some developing oak towards the finish with hints of cream and vanilla added. Read More

  • Tom Gore Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Spicy hot and tropical on the nose with pineapple and mango notes with citrus flair coming in as well and a green note. This is juicy and fresh in the mouth, quite refreshing and full of bright acidity and again, that green note coming through the midpalate and delivering herbal notes of green pepper. Towards the finish this turns quite tart and... Read More

  • Quivet Cellars McGah Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Fairly pale yellow color. Quite fruity on the nosepear, banana. Fruitiness is not as obvious on the tongue, but I do get some pear and some tropical hintsagain banana. Some herbal hints mid- to rear palate. Not as acidic as most contemporary California SBs seem to be and, again, thankfully, no overpowering grapefruit flavor. Maybe that fad ... Read More

  • Oxford Landing SB (Marlborough NZ) was my introduction to this grape. Oxford Landing is a reasonable price for a surprisingly low % and an acceptable intro to this grape. However.... My real introduction was with Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough. Revelation; nice sharp taste (not too sharp), reliable 'vintage' (I'm a newbie so I don't c...

  • My love fo Sauv. Blanc is a relatively new one. I discovered the wonders of this strain while representing New Zealand's Villa Maria winery at Israel's largest wine exhibit - "Sommelier", which took place in November '10. I tried both the Blancs from the Private Bin and the Cellar Selection series. The aromas sent me dreaming. I had visions of t...
