Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. This noble grape is also successfully grown in Washington State and in New York on Long Island. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

Sauvignon Blanc on Snooth

  • Matanzas Creek Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Tropical fruit aromas of mango and banana to open with notes of lemon and spice following. Juicy and full bodied in the mouth, this carries a lot of vanilla and butter notes with some tart lemon and grapefruit, a burst of acidity on the mid palate and a nuttiness to the finish that smooths out towards more citrus and cream. • Chateau Rahoul Graves Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

Call it a holdover from student days and wage slavery, but I still rejoice when ... when ... scent evokes the Sauvignon Blanc more with gooseberry and lemon grass, with a nice acidic entry and more gooseberry, grass and green fruit on the palate. Great with food and a delicious aperitif, though not strong on depth. 9 Read More

  • Paul Dolan Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Potter Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Grassy white peach, lemon and clean floral notes on the nose. Juicy peach, melon and pink grapefruit notes present here with a warmth to the mid palate that highlights the acidity, herbal grassiness and cantaloupe on the finish. Clean, light and fruity. Read More

  • Chateau Olivier Blanc Grand Cru Classe 2013

    Snoothrank:

Quite a serious wine is the 2013 Olivier; there are the usual grassy, pear and lemon rind notes on the nose, with a clean, acidic entry dominated by lime citrus on the palate - perhaps with a dollop of ripe pear. There is some almond bitterness on the finish, but this will soften in a year or two. Will last several years but quite hedonically ... Read More

  • Oxford Landing SB (Marlborough NZ) was my introduction to this grape. Oxford Landing is a reasonable price for a surprisingly low % and an acceptable intro to this grape. However.... My real introduction was with Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough. Revelation; nice sharp taste (not too sharp), reliable 'vintage' (I'm a newbie so I don't c...

  • My love fo Sauv. Blanc is a relatively new one. I discovered the wonders of this strain while representing New Zealand's Villa Maria winery at Israel's largest wine exhibit - "Sommelier", which took place in November '10.
