Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. This noble grape is also successfully grown in Washington State and in New York on Long Island. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

Sauvignon Blanc on Snooth

  • Apsara Sauvignon Blanc Rivers Reach 2014

    Snoothrank:

Very pretty clear yellow color. Lots of fresh fruit aromas, but its hard to pin anything down. On the tongue, it is nice to get just a hint of grapefruit instead of that full-on, in-your-face blast that so many SBs seem to have these days. Also, some melon flavor. Some grassiness. Very restrained on the acidspeaks to the control of the grap... Read More

  • WD - I have a 2013 Duckhorn Decoy Sauvignon Blanc in the fridge, but this afternoon I enjoyed some Bordeaux wine at one of my favorite post-massage bistro's (Bistro Vivant in McLean, VA).  Another retired person was also outside near me and we chatted about living the retired life while we're still young enough to enjoy it.  My selections were f... • David Akiyoshi Sauvignon Blanc Musque Clone Lodi 2014

    Snoothrank:

A recent Naked Wines selection. Rarely drink Sauvignon Blanc, so have not developed much of a taste, but I found this one delightful. Opens with grapefruit and in the background, a hint of baker's yeast, then some kiwi and an interesting ripe strawberry scent or two, then green moss, intense kiwi, and sunshine grass. There is a great minerality ... Read More

  • Oxford Landing SB (Marlborough NZ) was my introduction to this grape. Oxford Landing is a reasonable price for a surprisingly low % and an acceptable intro to this grape. However.... My real introduction was with Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough. Revelation; nice sharp taste (not too sharp), reliable 'vintage' (I'm a newbie so I don't c...
