Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. This noble grape is also successfully grown in Washington State and in New York on Long Island. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. • Enkidu Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Very much and herbal/grassy nose. Interesting combination of herbalness and stone fruit is my initial tongue sensation. Then, there is a lemon pith sensation. The lemon sensation seems to linger a bit giving good refreshment. After a few minutes of air, stone fruit sensations seem more emergent. Read More

  • Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Binny's 6/2017. Mary loved it and I was very close to saying the same. NZ, just does not export crap. Other countries can learn from their system. California, gets a pass, although they could secede from the Union and would then have to compete with a better value product at the low end of the price scale. Read More

  • Demorgenzon Reserve Chenin Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Fresh apricot, apple and soft melon aromas. Buttery and creamy textured on entry, this has a pleasant lemon palate and medium-full body, finishing a bit herbal. Read More

  • Oxford Landing SB (Marlborough NZ) was my introduction to this grape. Oxford Landing is a reasonable price for a surprisingly low % and an acceptable intro to this grape. However.... My real introduction was with Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough. Revelation; nice sharp taste (not too sharp), reliable 'vintage' (I'm a newbie so I don't c...

  • My love fo Sauv. Blanc is a relatively new one. I discovered the wonders of this strain while representing New Zealand's Villa Maria winery at Israel's largest wine exhibit - "Sommelier", which took place in November '10.
