Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

Sweet, fresh and violet rich aromatics greet the nose followed by aroma of wild plums, almost tropical fruit, cinnamon and clay. Ths is smooth and polished with a fair amount of sweet extract concealing the acid and very soft tannins on the palate. Decidedly plummy in the mouth, and more a wine of texture than flavor, the acids struggle to shi... Read More

  • La Chablisienne Saint Bris 2013

The 2013 edition of La Chablisienne Saint Bris is typically light, thirst-quenching and evoking a light scent of smoke, grass and lemon. The flavour is also full of similarly delicate lemon and herbal notes. Perfect for barbequed prawns e. g. and good value. 86 points. Read More

  • Bedrock Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County 2013

Very fruity nose gives hits of melon, tropicalpineapplegreen apple, but, also, some grassiness. On the palate I get more of the same with tart acid and some slatey earthiness. Tartness, more than anything else, seems to linger in the aftertaste. A very refreshing wine. Great on a hot day such as today, the first or second or third day of au... Read More

  • Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2013

I am not very experienced in wine, but I have had several Sauvignon Blancs before and I did not like this one. I get excited each time I open a bottle of wine and this was a bit of a let down. I really should be $6 a bottle, because that's what it tastes like. Read More
