Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. This noble grape is also successfully grown in Washington State and in New York on Long Island. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. Sauvignon Blanc on Snooth

  • Chateau Olivier Blanc Grand Cru Classe 2013

Quite a serious wine is the 2013 Olivier; there are the usual grassy, pear and lemon rind notes on the nose, with a clean, acidic entry dominated by lime citrus on the palate - perhaps with a dollop of ripe pear. There is some almond bitterness on the finish, but this will soften in a year or two. Will last several years but quite hedonically ... Read More

  • Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Chunky papaya, green melon and fresh lime notes on the nose of this fruit forward wine. This is expressive and zesty in the mouth showing good power and length and a mostly citrus palate of lime and grapefruit with a good dose of spice warming the mid-palate and a lightly floral finish. • Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley 2015

Grassy notes of golden berries, lemon zest and peach on the nose. Delicate on entry, this develops a tart acidity through the mid-palate and shows more lemon zest, white peach and blossom notes with a green note of beeswax and cut lawn towards the finish. Read More

  • Chateau la Garde Blanc 2013

For several years now, I have been buying a few Chateau la Garde Blanc, and the wine never seems to disappoint; the 2013 edition is weighty with its backbone of Sauvignon Gris, and has a grassy nose followed by mouth cleansing acidity and delicious lemon-lime flavours on the palate. This is a very fine wine for the price and will last 5-10 more... Read More

  • Oxford Landing SB (Marlborough NZ) was my introduction to this grape. Oxford Landing is a reasonable price for a surprisingly low % and an acceptable intro to this grape. However.... My real introduction was with Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough. Revelation; nice sharp taste (not too sharp), reliable 'vintage' (I'm a newbie so I don't c...

  • My love fo Sauv. Blanc is a relatively new one. I discovered the wonders of this strain while representing New Zealand's Villa Maria winery at Israel's largest wine exhibit - "Sommelier", which took place in November '10. I tried both the Blancs from the Private Bin and the Cellar Selection series. The aromas sent me dreaming. I had visions of t...
