Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

  • Gérard Pierre Morin & Sancerre Vieilles Vignes 2005

Give this Sancerre a try if you are interested in exploring the diversity of French terroir. Les Terres Blanches promotes a powerful and unique palate with significant minerality, especially on the finish. This is not a fruity wine, nor tremendously complex, but one we have come to frequently enjoy. Try it with hors d'oeuvres or pair it with ... Read More

  • Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2006

A meaty, slightly funky nose. Nice acidic attack, lively with strong peach and grass notes. Not overpowering grass, which is nice. Long finish, with some grassiness. Nice. Read More

  • Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2006

really refreshing stone fruit flavors, yet surprisingly dry. Im normally more of a fan of the citrusy and herbacious SB's, but this was surprising light and crisp on the palate even with the peachiness. Read More

  • Hanna Winery Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Unlike more traditional Sauv. Blancs, which are low on the flavor intensity scale, the Hanna sauv. blancs trumpet themselves. Aromas of citrus, particularly lemon, and grapefruit, announce themselves clearly in the nose. On the forepalate, you get a bubbling sensation (a sign of secondary fermentation), and a reinforcement of the nose with suc... Read More

  • Source Napa Gamble Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2006

An amazing sauv. blanc. - layer after layer of flavor. Nose: a subtle fruit bowl: lime, grapefruit, and grass, as you'd expect, but also whiffs of honeysuckle, and something sweet & spicy. I dipped my nose in the glass three times before tasting.Palate: A perfect backbone of citrus and acidity, off of which all the other flavors dance. First ... Read More
