Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

  • Granbazán Albariño Ambar 2005

Delicious and full of fruit flavor, I believe I had the '06 vintage. Ordered it at a terrific spanish seafood restaurant on Staten Island. However my distaste for seafood had prevented me from the obviously delicious pairing, it went quite well with my pork chops. Read More

  • Frizky Zebras 2006

While not as complex and interesting as some of my favorite traditionally bottled varieties, the proper amount of acidity capped off a delicious blend of grapefruit and oranges. Surprisingly refreshing, this South African wine from Leopard Frog Vineyards confirms for me at least that Tetra Paks are not something to necessarily refuse - even if I... Read More

  • Domaine Michel Brock Sancerre 2006

Opens with a light mineral nose that gives way to some surprisingly strong floral tones. Its very mineral, but not as crisp as i would have expected. Finishes on minerals and spice. Its really a Sancerre for people who want something sweeter and more floral than most. Had with scallops, oysters but works with any fish. Read More

  • Chateau Laures Blanc 2006

The Semillon really comes though on the nose giving a lovely herby touch to the lemon-citrus that dominates. Palate is nicely rich and full with a slight spritz and good acidity balancing it all out. A honeyed touch to the lemony complexity all melds together wonderfully. Read More

Sweet almost to a fault. Acid on this is overpowering and threatens to cover up the fruit below. Read More
