Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

  • Kalyra Sauvignon Blanc Santa Ynez Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is apparently one of Mike Brown's favorite varietals. This is a very nice Sauvignon Blanc. Had a bottle with some pippies with white wine, parmesan, chili fettucine. Great complement, drained the bottle. A big improvement on the 2006 from what I remember of it. Not too acidic like some cheaper Kiwi Sauvigon Blancs, good amount of fruit and ... Read More

  • Clocktower Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008

    Snoothrank:

Really loved this one; everything a NZ Sauvignon Blanc should be, and a value at that. Brings to mind a thought, however, as to whether even Sauvignon Blancs such as this are starting to become a bit too expensive for consumers in these times. Though I really loved this one, here are some slightly less expensive options from other competitive ... Read More

  • Viña Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc Visión 2007

    Snoothrank:

Served slightly chilled. This wine is a pale yellow color in the glass. On the nose this wine shows tropical fruit, pineapple, papaya, and pear. The flavors on the palate follow the nose with papaya and other tropical fruits. This wine has off-dry sweetness, good acidity, and a medium-light body. The finish is quick but clean with a little ... Read More
