Prounounced “San-joh-vay-say,” this Italian wine varietal is Tuscany’s #1 red wine grape. It’s the pistol of Central Italy, with the capability to produce styles ranging from red wines to still wines, sparkling wines to dessert wines, It’s the grape every grape wants to be, with at least 14 Sangiovese clones existing today.

Sangiovese is excellent as a blend, but when used as a sole varietal, it is hard and acidic. Winemakers tend to blend this varietal with Bordeaux grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, and even white wine grapes, sometimes Trebbiano and Malvasia. Sangiovese’ role in Tuscany’s famous Chianti wines is similar to Cabernet Sauvignon’s key presence in Bourdeaux wines -- A typical Read more »

  • Hello! I'd figured this is the "introduce yourself" page and I might as well ... such as Barbera, Pinot Nero, Sangiovese, Valpolicella and a couple of blends. But trust me.. I won't turn down a good Brunello!!!Well.. that's enough of me.. how's everyone else here on the board Read More

Smoky dark color. LIcorice aromas. Medium bodied, with blackberry flavors and oaky finish. Amazing wine for the price, as always with Banfi. Read More

  • Falesco Supertuscan Blend Umbria IGT Vitiano 2006

A top choice for a daily drinker. Vitiano Falesco offers great value at $7.99 ... ... sauvignon, merlot and sangiovese, this wine delivers on the palate, with lots of fruit flavors including berries, cassis, cherries, oak and hints of chocolate. The finish is a bit lacking, but for the price it cannot be bea Read More

  • Notro Tinto de Montana 2007

This wine reminded me a lot of Chianti, no doubt due to the 50% sangiovese in the blend. This wine has a light body and features red fruit flavors including cherry. Tannins were pretty easy and the acidity adds nice sharpness. I think that this wine would pair nicely with a vast array of dinner options. Not overly complex, but an excellent v... Read More

  • Pietra Santa Supertuscan Blend Cienega Valley Sassolino 2005

Dark fruits in this Super Tuscan style wine were on the forefront for me with touches of berry and cassis. Earth and leather on the nose. Chocolate flavors and some oak integrate nicely with firm tannins that give the wine great structure. I was impressed by this wine when I tasted it and for around $14 in my locale I think that this wine pre... Read More

  • Tudal Family Winery Red Blend Napa Valley Tractor Shed Red 2006

Merlot is not the primary grape in the blend for this wine but to me the wine seemed to have a lot of merlot character. Fruit-forward. The body was medium and smooth in the usual California style. I would give this a high 3 out of 5 rating but not quite a 3.5 to me. Read More

  • Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale 2006

This is a good wine but I wouldn't call it awe-inspiring. We bought two bottles and found that each was very inconsistent with the others. The first time we had it was bold and dry, the next time (a few weeks later, not months or years) we tasted vanilla undertones. I think the next time I want a Chianti, I'll look elsewhere. Read More
