Roussanne

Rousanne

Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

Roussanne on Snooth

  • Novelty Hill Viognier Stillwater Creek 2012

    Snoothrank:

95% Viognier; 5% RoussanneThe classic nose is filled with lots of candied citrus, white flowers, honeycomb, and a hint of vanilla. Solid acids support nice fruit, fresh on the palate which is rich with quince fruit and a lovely hint of polleny polyphenolic bitterness. This is a pretty zesty style of Viognier featuring intriguing notes of green ... Read More

  • No, Karen, but, then again, the list of things I've never heard of is quite ... quite ... this Musique is a Roussanne/Chardonnay/Muscat blend, and it has definitely seen oak--12 months. So, I guess that is not the Musique you meant. It might be helpful if we understood the reason for your question.  My guess is that either you have tried Musique... • J. Scott Cellars Columbia Valley Roussanne 2011

  • So, do you have your wine planned out yet for the Thanksgiving meal? I'm going a bit off course this year as I am smoking my turkey so I'm probably going to go heavy on Syrah rather than Pinot Noir. But that could change based on input from the guests.First off I'll likely pop a 2010 Copain Baker Ranch Syrah as it shows quite Pinot-like and I ha... Read More

  • Le Vieux Pin Ava 2011

    Snoothrank:

The Rhone-style white is mostly Viognier (78%) but does not especially show it ... as it allows the finesse of Roussanne and the softness of Marsanne to coat the palate with herbal tea flavors. A nice, refreshing wine in the style we want to see more of. 88 point Read More

  • Tablas Creek White Rhone Blend Paso Robles Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc 2006

    Snoothrank:

Ripe pear, honey and still a touch of some floral notes. This is an interesting Rhone blend with some age and a gold hue. Still drinking very nicely but seems to be on the latter part of its drinking curve. Read More
