Roussanne

Rousanne

Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

    Snoothrank:

A wonderful wine; dry, crisp minerality that has some juiciness in it, the nose is fresh and inviting with hints of citirus and melon. Read More

  • Prisoner Proprietary Red 1990

    Snoothrank:

A veritable brett bomb. I like a bit of brett but here it verges on excessive. There are still intense notes of roasted blackberry, Szechuan peppercorn, pink peppercorn and salty, white mushroom on the nose but the slightly elevated alcohol and brett really mar the nose. Polished and round in the mouth but here too the brett obscured much of wh... Read More

  • Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 1989

    Snoothrank:

Very fresh on the nose with split leather, raspberry, herbal and wildflowers rushing up from the glass. Subtle spice, pepper, and soil tones remain a bit obscured by the intensity of the fruit but gentle iron and blood tones struggle to assert themselves. Bright and ripe on entry with red cherry fruit that have a citrus tinge to them. Fine balan... Read More

  • Château de Beaucastel Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1988

    Snoothrank:

Jammy and spicy on the nose with rich blackberry pie filling tones backed up with powerful notes of leather and beef. This gains significant complexity in the glass going through a full register of earthy tones stretching from milk chocolate through tea, tobacco and anise with even a nuanced truffle note. Smooth, rich and suave in the mouth. Thi... Read More

This is a previous Gold Medal Wine Club-Gold Series selection. In the words of ... stirs my libido, the former Roussanne, now known as INCOGNITO. This wines predecessor was awarded Best Rhone in the World when it was labeled as a Roussanne at the 2000 L. A. International Wine Competition. However, using DNA testing, it was determined that the g... Read More

  • Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 1995

    Snoothrank:

This bottle underperformed. Typical leathery notes on the nose with notes of spice and anise but only hinting at the dark, slightly jammy fruits that should be popping here. In the mouth this had good structure and nicely resolved at that but the flavors were washed out and there was just not enough weight here. Probably some early heat damage h... Read More
