Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

  • Château de la Font du Loup Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007

The Chateau de la Font du Loup Chateauneuf du Pape white 2007 is a blend of 40% ... ... and 15% Bourboulec. The Roussanne and Clairette have been vinified in "second vin" from Chateau d'Yquem, then matured in french oak for 8 months. The other grapes have been vinified in stainless steel tanks to ensure a great freshness in the final blend. Th... Read More

  • Sobon Estate Roussanne Amador County 2008

Fascinating nose thats woody, oaky and almost earthy. Very intriguing. The wine has a real creamy character with butter and soft spice from the oak coming through. There are flavors of coconuts and dill with a light citrus flavor on the finish. Very nice, and held up for 4 days after opening in the fridge Read More

  • Due Vigne Viognier Suisun Valley 2007

Mineral, acidic and clean. This keeps the mouthfeel lighter. Medium fruit with a very mineral almost minty finish. A little sugar on the finish keeps the wine in balance, as the florals are not that vibrant. Read More

A bit slow to open with soft floral tones married to deep, almost honied, quite smoky baked banana peel, and preserved lemon tones, Gains a big acacia tone with air. Rich with good acidity and a nice mineral edge to the deep orchard fruit tones. Real snap to the flavors and fine balance with rather restrained kwi and goosebbery notes that gain t... Read More

  • Sobon Estate Roussanne Amador County 2008

Great nose, lots of boiled chestnuts and toasted chestnut shells, intense with a noticeable yet integrated oak backdrop. Lilacs, white pepper and very light mangosteen fruit. Decidedly soft in the mouth with a rich, viscous feel and initial honied fruit note that yields to an almost strawberry tinged mid-palate with rich orange tones and a touc... Read More
