Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Roussanne on Snooth

  • L'Aventure Roussanne 2007

Rich butterscotch nose with almond flavors. Very oaky up front. Incredibly emollient mouth feel - very rich and filling. Rich and warm throughout, the wine was verging on overpowering (almost, but it managed to stay on the right side of things). Served with seared scallops. Read More

  • Zaca Mesa Roussanne 2006

Lovely light nose of peach and apricot. I really like the texture of the wine, it's creamy and juicy at the same time, with the tiniest bit of a bite at the end and a long creamy finish. Flavors have nice fat stone fruits and some oak. Very pleasant. Read More

  • Zaca Mesa Roussanne 2006

Lovely, intense aromatics combine hints of lychee and green tea with crisp green pear tones and well-integrated notes of fading spices, chalk, chestnut and lavender. Really rich yet bright on entry, with a seductive mouthfeel that manages to be both filling and vivid. The fruit is verging into the slightly honied, dried peach end of the spectru... Read More

  • Copain Roussanne Paso Robles James Berry Vineyard 2007

Copain is located on a hillside just off Eastside Road in Windsor, with a sweeping view of the Russian River Valley below. Yet, interestingly, Copain makes no Russian River wines, concentrating instead on vineyards from Mendocino and the Central Coast. This superb Rhone Ranger white comes from a vineyard in Paso Robles. Complex nose has notes of... Read More
