Roussanne

Rousanne

Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape Aoc Blanc Domaine Vieux Télégraphe Clairette Roussanne Bar Boulenc Grenache Blanc 2007

    Snoothrank:

I am not the one who should review the Wine Spectator's choice for the #3 wine of 2009. I could not resist observing, however, that this is one huge hunk of vino. It has savory flavors and an intensity that are truly awe-inspiring. This is serious wine. It almost tastes like a major Burgundian beef dinner. I will be watching as it evolves an... Read More

  • It may strike people as odd that someone who studied in Bordeaux, produced wine ... L'AventureRousanne 2007 85% Roussanne, 15% Viognier - Wool, soil, vanilla, and peachy fruity aromas initially fill the glass. With some air the fruit takes on a greengage plum tone and toasty, caramelly accents. In the mouth this is pretty well balanced with sup... Read More

  • L'Aventure Roussanne 2007

    Snoothrank:

Wool, soil, vanilla, and peachy fruity aromas initially fill the glass. With some air the fruit takes on a greengage plum tone and toasty, caramelly accents. In the mouth this is pretty well balanced with super acids keeping the richness in check. Still very young, this has a nice mineral driven grab on the mid-palate before relaxing into a honi... Snoothrank:

Extraordinary and very different White Wine. These guys are doing some very ... ... This one is Marsanne, Roussanne with a little Chardonnay. Interesting spicy white wine with lots of depth. Cinnamon and Nutmeg notes. Bottle says it is in the barrel for 15 months, I though it would be over oaked, but it clearly is not. It should last years.... Read More
