Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

  • Domaine de Lancyre Roussanne France Languedoc Roussillon 2007

We had this wine with soft-shelled crabs, frits and asparagus. It was crisp and dry, just what we wanted with the butter/lemon sauce and it will become a regular in our wine rack. We think we had a good value at $15.00 but seeing that it is selling for over $20.00 would warrent buying a case or 2. Read More

  • Prisoner Proprietary Red 1990

Opened a well maintained bottle from my own cellar of the '90 vintage (believe this to be a factor on this huge, long-lived wine -- it simply keeps going). Tasted it over five hours: the longer it sat the more pronounced the jammy blueberries and black-olive residue on the side of the tongue. Tannins started and remained round and smooth. Very ...
