Roussanne

Rousanne

Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

  • Hello All!I'm putting a menu together for a wine pairing and wonder if anyone can recommend a white in the $25 range that pairs well with mushrooms stuffed with foie gras, they will be served alongside a carmelized onion bread pudding, so I guess I need a pretty significant white to stand up to that.  I would even consider a red if there is a be... • Hey all. I'm a wine reviewer, and I just launched an article on some pretty great Rhone blends from Calcareous Vineyards, out of Paso Robles. Plus, I'm going to be attending a Rhone Rangers tasting in a couple of days, so I've got the region on my mind. What are some of your favorite Rhone grapes, regions (New or Old World), and producers? Snoothrank:

This magnificent white is a Rhone-ranger blend of Roussanne and Viognier, and it shows both off beautifully. Lovely nose of honeysuckle, peaches, apricots, and a myriad of spices. Despite the gracefulness of the aromas, the fruit flavors tweaking the taste buds are remarkably rich and forceful. Yet the wine does not feel heavy or overdone in any... Read More

The taste is light with neither an objectional taste nor a interesting flavour. This is good for a garden party on a hot afternoon. Don't invite a wine lover he midgt not like it.At $ 11 for a... • Lionheart Wines White Rhone Blend Russian River Valley Saralee's Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

Excellent California white rhone, made in a rhone style with a touch of California terroir. Would pair well with Summer outdoor cuisine, e.g. seafood, avocado on crackers, lime chicken. Pop and pour. Tested at 58 deg F. Improved with air time. Nose of creamy lemon, lime and mineral. In the mouth has a round, smooth, and creamy feel as it c... Read More

  • Twisted Tree Vineyards White Rhone Blend Marsanne Roussanne 2009

    Snoothrank:

This Lake Osoyoos white has a nose of stewed fruit such as apricots, peaches, ... of these grapes (especially Roussanne) know well; there is more stone fruit and that mystifying yet enticing orange Pekoe tea on the palate. This wine is a match for any but the best Rhone whites. And bravo on the price to Read More

  • Help!  I'm having a BBQ/wedding reception towards the end of this month and have hit a huge snag!  My wine shop just informed me that the wine we wanted (Chateau Bonnet 2008 Entres deux Mers) is completely sold out and they don't know when they'll be getting more in!  I'm kind of freaking out because we have about three weeks until the party... ...
