Roussanne

Rousanne

Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

  • La Vieille Ferme Blanc 2019

    Snoothrank:

This year's edition by La Vieille Ferme (Perrin-owned) Blanc is from Luberon, a massif in sourther France famed for communes, emigres from Britain and the US - inter alia. This mass-produced wine (which is not always from Luberon ...it (as they say) depends. Bourboulenc and Grenache Blanc seem to dominate; the nose is of tropical and sub-tropi... Read More

  • Gabriel Meffre Cotes du Rhone "Saint-vincent" 2018

    Snoothrank:

The 2018 Saint-Vincent blend CdR from Gabriel Meffre is on target once more: ... tea flavours and scent of Roussanne. Bouquet is very inviting at this price point: kiwi fruit, wet iron minerality, and viognier ginger and cake spice. Quite inviting, and entry is pleasant, with hard spicy notes but clean mineral water purity and some white fr... Read More

  • Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees Roussanne 2017

    Snoothrank:

This interesting little wine from southern Beaujolais is quite the conversation piece; here we have Rhone variety known for its mesmerizing tisane bouquet and yellow fruits on mid palate. Guess what? Here we have a more yellow custard, garden flower nose with a peachy confit flavour on the palate... a bit more tense than Rhone examples in my o... Read More

  • Henri Milan la Carree Vin de France 2010

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.cellartrade.co.uk for ... ... ... but this wine is 100% roussanne and the AOC regulations require a blend of at least two grape varieties so therefore this cuvee is a 'Vin de France'. Roussanne is a late-ripening white grape named after its skin colour [reddish-brown] when ripe that originated... Read More

  • Halcon Roussanne Yorkville Highlands 2018

    Snoothrank:

A very crisp wine. Lemon pith that I quickly detect tells you that there is acidic crispness. I also am getting a tropical flavor--kiwi. Some stoniness. Very pleasant herbal aftertaste. Read More

  • Epoch Estate Wines White 2018

    Snoothrank:

47% Grenache Blanc, 42% Viognier, 11% Roussanne -- Beautiful, straw color in the glass. Viognier is immediately recognizable on the nose--honeysuckle, apricot. Again, Viognier fruitiness is apparent on the tongue--peach, table grapes, and the almost-gewurztraminer spiciness. However, this wine is loaded with acid--from the other grapes, I wou... Read More

  • In Texas Benjamin Calais is king of roussanne!

    Comment by 535087Francotimeo 535087 Francotimeo

  • I noticed a couple of Texas roussannes in the list and wanted to add that if anyone knows about Texas roussanne it is Benjamin Calais at Calais Winery in Dallas. His current bottling is the 2010 La Cuvee Principale, a 100% Texas-grown roussanne. It sells out fast but production is growing and should be more available in the future.
