Roussanne

Rousanne

Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

  • Hi guys, I'm here again for some advice on wine travel: I will be in Lyon this November for 4 days (well, 3 and 1/2) and I was thinking about trying to hit a couple of caves. I will not be driving, which makes it tricky, but not afraid of taking trains, buses, Bla Bla Car, Uber, etc... Also not *totally* opposed to tours... I know, beggars can't... Read More

    Snoothrank:

For you "punters" out there - and I was one once, and still am - in many fields ... fields - this South African Roussanne is an excellent intro to the best (in my opinion) white varietal of the Rhone. I try, but I cannot distinguish any difference between this wonderful wine and an expensive French alternative; the nose has a layered tisane no... Read More

  • Chateau la Liquiere Cistus Faugeres Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

The Cistus (which is named for a white, perfumed Mediterranean flower) Faugeres Blanc is a wild, spicy, perfume bomb - smelling of hot, white subtropical flowers; on the palate, there is a spicy, hot cinnamon (the Vermetino effect) finish which would diminish with some aging, but the wine is satisfying and tasty with orange peel and tropical fr... • In Texas Benjamin Calais is king of roussanne!

    Comment by 535087Francotimeo 535087 Francotimeo

  • I noticed a couple of Texas roussannes in the list and wanted to add that if anyone knows about Texas roussanne it is Benjamin Calais at Calais Winery in Dallas. His current bottling is the 2010 La Cuvee Principale, a 100% Texas-grown roussanne. It sells out fast but production is growing and should be more available in the future.
