Roussanne

Rousanne

Increasingly popular in the Central Coast of California for blending purposes and as a varietal, Roussanne is a trendy, white Rhône grape. In France it is often blended with Marsanne, and is cultivated in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon, as well as the Rhone. With inconsistent yields, poor resistance to winds, and its susceptibility to powdery mildew and rot, Roussanne had almost disappeared from the northern Rhône until superior clones were developed. Now, it is only one of two vine varieties permitted in the white versions of the northern Rhône’s red wine appellations. In the southern Rhône, it is only one of four grape varieties permitted in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Roussanne’s main asset is its distinctive aroma, along with an acidity which helps it to age better than its partner Marsanne. Roussanne tends to ripen late and can benefit from oak ageing.

Rousanne, you’re a beauty from southern France; deftly perfumed with strikingly angular features. You offer style and grace in Read more »

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in London [www.nicolas.co.uk ] for ... ... made from a blend of the roussanne and marsanne grapes.80% of production is sparkling but my bottle is a still wine and was made by the Cave de Tain co-operative.I started the bottle last night with my fish supper and I did enjoy it. • Interesting Spanish white made from the Merseguera grape. Reminds me a bit of Roussanne with just a touch less of that almond flavor. There's some honeysuckle, apricot and a hint of ripe peach. The acidity is there but not overly so and the finish is of medium length. Read More

  • Saint-Cosme Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2011

Peach, melon, tangerine and honeysuckle dominate both the nose and palate. This is gripping and crisp with good minerality and acidity with a zippy after taste. Well done - Paul 89 points Read More

  • Qupe Marsanne 2008

    Snoothrank:

This is just an excellent bottle of Santa Ynez Marsanne/Roussanne from Qupe. The nose is very distinctive, floral and reminiscent of freshly peeled clementine. For an '08 white, this is still very much alive and vibrant. Layers of orange zest, orange marmalade, apricot, ripe peach and a touch of salinity mix with medium plus acidity. Read More

  • OT, speaking of berserker days, I opened a bottle of Tercero Roussanne and it is mighty fine! Dried apricot, sponge cake, almonds, tongue coating caramel, medium acidity and a really long finish. Sounds a bit like dessert and it is but also vibrant and not heavy. One of the best Roussannes I've tasted and it's getting better the more it warms up. Read More

  • In Texas Benjamin Calais is king of roussanne!

  • I noticed a couple of Texas roussannes in the list and wanted to add that if anyone knows about Texas roussanne it is Benjamin Calais at Calais Winery in Dallas. His current bottling is the 2010 La Cuvee Principale, a 100% Texas-grown roussanne. It sells out fast but production is growing and should be more available in the future.
